Women's Hoops Hosts East Tenn. St. Sunday

STARKVILLE, Miss. ­ The Mississippi State Lady Bulldogs (1-0) host the East Tennessee State Lady Bucs on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 2 p.m. CT in the second game of the weekend 2005-06 season opener. State took the season home opener over Southeastern Louisiana on Friday, 71-55. MSU is now 20-12 in season openers and 15-0 in season opener's played at home.

State scored a resounding 44 points in the paint vs. Southeastern Louisiana and even took the advantage with 25 points made off of 20 SLU turnovers. Three Lady Bulldogs scored in double digits in the win: freshman Robin Porter with 16 points, junior Natasha Henderson with a career-high 12 and sophomore Miayorka Johnson with a career-high 11 points. Senior Mamie McKinney pulled in nine points, nine rebounds and a career-high seven assists for the night.

This will mark the first game of the 2005-06 season for ETSU. MSU took the first meeting with ETSU last season, 74-64, in Johnson City, Tenn. on Dec. 30, 2004. The Lady Bucs went 13-7 last season and 9-11 in the Atlantic Sun Conference. They return four starters to the squad in senior guard BJ Banjo who averaged 15.7 ppg and 4.2 rpg; senior forward Candace Gibson with 8.7 ppg and 8.1 rpg; sophomore guard/forward Michele DeVault who had 6.4 ppg and 2.7 rpg; sophomore guard/forward Nicole Akers had 4.6 ppg and 2.5 rpg.

MSU welcomes back ETSU head coach Karen Kemp who was a Lady Bulldog assistant coach and recruiting coordinator from 1985-87 under former MSU head coach Brenda Paul.
