During the past week, I, as well as Gene's Page recruiting writer Charles Johnson, talked to several high school players in Mississippi. The entire interviews either have been posted or will be posted in the next couple of days. Below are the players and the schools they are most interested at this time. Please understand that the schools listed are the ones the players are most interested in (the schools are listed in the order they mentioned them to me). That doesn't mean the schools have shown interest in the youngster at this time. However, schools are just now doing their May evaluations so that could change.

  • Ken Griffith, LB from Brandon HS. Ken told me, if everything works out, he will sign with MSU. He also has LSU and Ole Miss on his list.
  • Jeremy Young, QB from Provine HS in Jackson. Jeremy likes MSU and Auburn at this time because they have both offered scholarship.
  • Marcus Cohen, OL from Clarksdale HS. Marcus likes Ole Miss, MSU, Miami and Florida State. Charles feels, after talking to Marcus, that he is an Ole Miss lean.
  • Paul Gorney, OL from Vicksburg HS. Paul is most interested in Auburn at the moment.
  • Bruce Edwards, WR from Columbus HS. Grew up a fan of LSU and MSU.
  • Viciente DeLoach, DE from Columbus HS. Viciente has grown up watching LSU, Miami and Florida on television.
  • Devrick Hampton, DE from Greenville Weston HS. Devrick is most interested in LSU (his #1 school), Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt and Rice.
  • Quenton Groves, DE from Greenville Weston HS. Quenton is most interested in Tennessee, LSU, Ole Miss and Auburn.
  • Demarcus Scott, LB from Greenville Weston HS. Demarcus' favorite schools at this time are LSU, Tennessee and Auburn.
  • Kelvin Sanders, FB from Greenville Weston HS. Kelvin's favorite schools are Tennessee, Miami, Florida, Southern Cal and Mississippi State.

The Columbus HS and Greenville Weston HS kids did not make The Clarion-Ledger top 50 juniors list, but don't let that fool you, they are all top recruits who, in some cases, are already receiving heavy interest from the likes of MSU, Ole Miss, Southern Miss, Stanford, Florida, Arkansas, Alabama, and Memphis.

53 players made Iron Dawg this year. 6 players - Ray Ray Bivines, Donald Lee, Carter Stanley (walk-on), Terrell Grindle, Slovakia Griffith, Justin Griffith - made Elite Dawg. To make Elite Dawg, a player had to meet the minimum standards on all 7 events (bench, squat, power clean, dips, pull ups, vertical leap and forty yard dash).

36 players lifted over 400 pounds in the bench. Of those 36 players, 9 lifted 450 or more pounds. 44 players lifted over 500 pounds in the squat. Of those 44, 6 squatted over 600 pounds. 30 players ran less than 4.8 in the forty. Of those 30, 5 ran a 4.45 or faster. 54 players jumped 30 inches or higher in the vertical jump. 11 of those 54 jumped 36 inches or higher.

The complete Iron Dawg interview with MSU strength coach Mike Grant will be posted later tonight or Tuesday morning.

I recently talked to a veteran Major League Baseball scout about several Alabama high school players MSU signed during the fall and spring recruiting periods. He is impressed with Jeff Butts, although he feels Butts should go to college first. [Butts, along with signee Brad Corley, are the two players that have the best chances of being drafted high enough to wind up going pro.-Gene] He also mentioned that he likes Brooks Dunn because he knows how to pitch and has a fastball that has been clocked in the mid to high 80's. He also felt that Tyler Jones from Mobile is a very good left-handed hitter who runs well.

When I asked him about the current crop of senior baseball players in the Mississippi high school ranks, he said MSU, if they wanted to win, had to go where the best players were. The talent pool in Alabama is better than the group in Mississippi. He mentioned that the top player in Mississippi this year is Kennard Springer. He also said Stephen Head is a good player. According to the scout, one Mississippi high school player whose status went down is Clay Dirks. Clay, who was the pre-season pick as the top player in the state of Mississippi this year, didn't perform as well as was expected of him.

While at the Sunday baseball game, Mike Richey, Assistant Athletic Director - Marketing and Promotions, was kind enough to grant me an interview. I will post the entire interview on my page elsewhere in a day or two. Here are some highlights from the interview.

  • Bulldog Family Celebrations: Even after the 3-8 football season last year, Mike feels the enthusiasm has been as good this year as it was last season at the Bulldog Family Celebrations that are currently going on in the state and out of state. He mentioned that the fans are happy with the Egg Bowl trophy being in Starkville, the football recruiting class and the players coming back.
  • Season Tickets: Season ticket and Bulldog Club information is presented at each of the Bulldog Family Celebrations. Mike mentioned that season ticket sales are going well. Not including the ones that are in but haven't been counted, about 7,000 season tickets have been imputed into the computer system. The applications were first mailed out around April 16th. Mike mentioned that the season ticket sales goal is 41,000. That includes the mini-packs, the family plan, student tickets and full priced tickets. Last year, MSU sold around 36,000.
  • Season Ticket Plans: There are two mini-packs and a family plan. One of the mini-packs includes Tennessee, Kentucky and Troy State. Its price is $55. The other mini-pack includes Auburn, Kentucky, Troy State and Jacksonville State. Its price is $110. The family plan is $124. These seats are on the east side in the upper deck (close to mid-field) and lower deck (closer to end zone). Mike mentioned that those who purchase the family plan tickets may want to write on their application whether they want the lower or upper deck location. The full price season ticket is $154. The student season ticket package is $18. In the season ticket application is a diagram of where the season ticket plans are located.
  • Bulldog Club Membership Drive: A group on campus has just finished a Bulldog Club membership drive that was very successful. About 4,800 people who had never been Bulldog Club members or whose membership had lapsed at least 18 months ago made Bulldog Club pledges totaling close to $400,000. Mike wasn't sure what the total Bulldog Cub membership will be if all the people who made pledges actually pay their pledges. [Based on the last figures I have, it could be in the 8,000 to 9,000 member range.-Gene]

I hope you enjoy the new chat room.
