Thomas Webb caught my eye at a Starkville practice several years ago. His combination of size and speed led me to believe he would eventually become a D-I prospect. And it looks like my prediction has come true because he now has several D-I schools in the hunt for his signature. One is Mississippi State.
"Mississippi State's (assistant) Coach (Ellis) Johnson called a couple of weeks ago and offered a scholarship," said Thomas. "They really hadn't been calling me much prior to that. He said they saw a game tape of me and got interested in me after seeing that. Coach Johnson mentioned when he was talking to me that (MSU head) Coach (Sylvester) Croom wasn't going to sign a tight end this year, but recently decided that he would."
There is one possible stipulation to the offer due to the number of commitments MSU already has, although it is not set in stone.
"Coach Johnson mentioned that they might want to grayshirt me if they don't have a scholarship to offer due to having so many committed already," said Thomas.
What are his feelings about that possibility?
"I don't mind that," said Thomas who is being recruited to play tight end on the collegiate level. "It would give me a chance to work out with the weights and get stronger. I would probably redshirt my first year anyway."
The State offer was his fourth. Who extended the other three?
"Southern Miss has also offered a scholarship," said the 6-5, 235-pounder. "And UAB has also offered one. I've also received an offer from Samford, a D-II school."
He's also hearing from two other schools, although neither has tendered a scholarship offer.
"Alabama and Ole Miss call me on occasion," he said.
With college coaches now able to take visits to prospects' homes, who has come in for a visit and who else is on the horizon?
"(Assistant) Coach (Derrek) Nix from Southern Miss came by my school (Monday) and visited my home (Monday night)," said Thomas. "It went real well. He answered questions that my mom and dad had. Coach Johnson mentioned that he would be coming in for a visit this Thursday."
As for official visits to the colleges, two are currently on his agenda.
"I have two official visits set up," said Thomas. "I'm going to Southern Miss on January 20th. Mississippi State wants me to come in either that same weekend or the weekend after that, the 27th. I'll probably visit them on the 27th."
Thomas currently has five schools on his favorites list.
"My favorites are the ones that have offered me, Mississippi State, Southern Miss and UAB," he said. "Those three are even. The others are Alabama and Ole Miss."
Check back in a couple of weeks and we'll have another recruiting update on Thomas Webb.
