Goodson Leads the Bulldogs to Victory

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Robby Goodson drove in a career-high six runs Wednesday night to lead Mississippi State (28-19-1) to an 18-5 win over Mississippi Valley State (10-39) at Dudy Noble Field. The win snapped a four-game losing skid for the Bulldogs, who open a three-game SEC series at No. 4 Alabama Friday.

The Delta Devils scored three times in the first inning off MSU starter Ryan Carroll and led 4-0 in the third inning. But the Bulldogs scored 18 unanswered runs, expanding a 6-4 lead with 12 runs in the seventh inning. MSU sent 17 batters to the plate in the inning, with Goodson drawing a bases-loaded walk and delivering a three-run double.

Casey Long went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs while Jason Burkley drove in two runs with a single and a misplayed infield grounder in the seventh inning.

Jeff Lacher (1-2), the third of seven MSU hurlers in the game, picked up his first win of the season. Lacher walked the first batter and then retired the next six he faced during his two-inning stint in the fourth and fifth innings.

MVSU's third pitcher in the game, Joseph Liberto (5-5) was touched for two runs in the fourth when MSU tied the score and two more in the fifth to take the loss. MVSU starter Josh Hailey blanked MSU over the first three innings but walked the first three batters he faced in the fourth. He left the game with the bases loaded and a 4-0 lead.

State scored on a bases loaded walk, a wild pitch, a sacrifice fly and a game-tying RBI single by Long in the fourth inning.

Adrian Brown doubled in a run in the first inning and Robert Reynolds went 3-for-5 to lead MVSU's 11-hit attack.
