BASEBALL

MSU/UM Series and Other Baseball Notes:

The sweep of the Rebels was MSU's first SEC sweep of the season. MSU came into the series with a seven-game losing streak in SEC play.

For the three-game series, MSU hit .330 as a team and scored 36 runs. MSU's pitchers allowed Ole Miss a .243 batting average while allowing 12 runs.

MSU had four batters to hit .400 or better during the series - Mungle .556, Goodson .455 and Gendron and Burkley .400 each. Brinson took RBI honors with 8. MSU batters only struck out 13 times and walked 22 times during the series. MSU's pitchers also only struck out 13 but walked just 7. Neither team stole a base during the series. In fact, only one attempt was made during the entire series.

Robby Goodson, who is now hitting .375 overall, is hitting a team-high .390 against SEC teams.

MSU is 6-4 in their last 10 games. Ole Miss is 3-7 in their last 10 games.

MSU goes into the SEC Tournament with a five-game winning streak, their second-longest of the season.

Mike Bianco is 2-6 against MSU, while Ron Polk is 79-43 against UM. MSU leads the overall series 221-172-5.

Ron Polk reached another coaching milestone with Sunday's win over Ole Miss. The winningest coach in SEC history has now won 1,000 games in 25 seasons (23 at MSU) coaching in the Southeastern Conference (1,000-494-1).

MSU wound up 22-10-1 at home, 11-11 on the road and 0-1 at a neutral site. Ole Miss was 27-9 at home, 9-10 on the road and 1-0 at a neutral site.

MSU is now 5-11 against teams ranked in the top 25 at the time they played them. Ole Miss wound up 7-8 against top 25 ranked teams.

MSU is now 28-12 against right-handed starting pitchers and 5-10-1 against left-handed starting pitchers. Ole Miss was also 5-10 against left-handed starting pitchers. They wound up 32-9 against right-handers.

Ole Miss was swept for the third time in SEC play this year. They were also swept at Florida and at home by Arkansas.

Ole Miss pitching has given up double digit runs in their last five SEC games.

BASKETBALL

According to my sources, official basketball visitor Shane Power (Forward, 6-5, 210) and his mother had a great visit at Mississippi State this past weekend. He still has three more visits to make before deciding where he is going to attend college. Shane will have to sit out a year before being able to play. He will be a junior in eligibility.

I have also been told by excellent sources that MSU has hired a new assistant basketball coach, Bruce Stewart of Okaloosa-Walton (FL) CC. Stewart, who has very successfully coached on the CBA, NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA levels, has won over 550 games during his 24-year career as a head coach. He has consistently taken teams to tournaments or playoffs at every level that he has coached.

FOOTBALL

MSU has another walk-on coming aboard. His name is Kyle Wiley. Kyle is a 6-3, 250, tight end who runs a 4.65 forty. Kyle is an excellent student and great person according to folks who know him very well. He played for an Oklahoma CC - I believe Northeast Oklahoma or Eastern Oklahoma - this past season. I believe he will have four years to play three. He plans on attending MSU during the second summer session and going through the Mike Grant conditioning class to be better prepared for SEC competition. He comes from a great bloodline. His dad, Bill, was an offensive lineman at Stanford during the early 70's and went to two Rose Bowls and played with Heisman Trophy winner Jim Plunkett. I plan on interviewing Kyle early this week.

TECHNICAL HELP

If you only want to view new topics on the message boards, there is a way you can set up your message board preferences to do that. Click on MY CONTROL CENTER on the message board. Then click on Edit Preferences. On the right-hand side of the page under BROWSING/VIEWING, there is a white box beside the words VIEW ONLY NEW TOPICS. Click that box so that it has a check mark in it. That changes the message board so that only new posts show up. If a new post is included in a previously viewed thread, the entire thread will show up.
