Lady Bulldogs Close Out 2005 Against UAB

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State's women's basketball team will conclude the 2005 portion of the schedule with a trip to Birmingham, Ala. on Thursday, Dec. 29, to face the Blazers of UAB in a 7 p.m. tip off at Bartow Arena.

The Lady Bulldogs are coming off a loss to No. 20 Purdue in the finals of the MSU Classic on Dec. 20, while the Lady Blazers come into the SEC-C-USA match up winners of their last four contests. UAB topped Western Kentucky, 66-61 in its previous game preceding the holiday break.

During UAB's win streak, they have topped Alabama and Middle Tennessee State, which was an NCAA Tournament team a year ago. The Green and Gold is led by Carmen Guzman and Crystal McFadden, both are averaging 16 points per game.

Head coach Sharon Fanning's squad is led in the scoring column by freshman Robin Porter. The Abbeville, Ala. product is averaging 11.9 points per game.

Thursday's meeting will be the 24th meeting on the hardwood between MSU and UAB. MState holds a one-game 12-11 advantage in the series. In the last meeting between the two schools in the 2003, the Lady Bulldogs won a 72-50 decision in Starkville.

The Maroon and White will launch 2006 in its final non-conference tilt versus the Panthers of Birmingham Southern on Monday, Jan. 2 at 7 p.m. in the Humphrey Coliseum. State will open its SEC slate on Thursday, Jan. 5 at home against the Lady ‘Backs of Arkansas.
