J.D. Hamilton has an unusual hobby. He's a rodeo state champion roper. J.D. talked about his hobby.

"I rope calves and steers. I started back when I was about 12," he said. "My dad did it. He was pretty good back when he was doing it. It's kind of tough being a big guy and doing it. But it's all about being an athlete. You have to be an athlete to do it."

And J.D. was pretty good at it, too.

"I was state champion at one time," said J.D. "I quit doing it because I was playing football. I was still doing it a little bit when I first got (to Co-Lin CC), but I wasn't doing it like I used to. Football kind of made me back off of it, but I still do it. It's still my favorite hobby."

Now, he has become the one that is being roped .... by college coaches, a lot of college coaches, looking to sign him on the dotted line in February.

"He's been offered by Texas A&M, Mississippi State, TCU, West Virginia, Louisiana Tech, Southern Miss, Marshall and Baylor," said Co-Lin CC head football coach Glenn Davis. "He's a guy, if he was a December graduate, that would have offers from all over the country. A lot of people aren't willing to wait. Florida, Florida State, some of those folks want them right now so that they can go through spring practice. LSU also liked him but backed off due to him not being a December graduate. It's not that he couldn't do it academically. It was a goal of his to be a state champion roper when he graduated high school. That meant a lot to him so he spent the summer traveling all over. If he could have just taken six hours (during that summer) he could have gotten out in December."

One of the offers he's received was less than 24 hours old when I did this interview.

"Texas A&M is the newest offer that I have got. They just offered yesterday," said J.D. "They are supposed to come in tomorrow (for an in-home visit)."

He's also had other in-home visits.

"I visited with (MSU head) Coach (Sylvester) Croom yesterday at my house," said the 6-4, 295-pounder. "The visit went pretty good. West Virginia came to my house when we first got out for Christmas or sometime around that."

As for a list of favorites, J.D. has five that he likes with two at the top.

"My top five, and this is in no certain order, would be MSU, TCU, West Virginia, USM and Louisiana Tech," he said. "MSU and West Virginia are still my top two."
