Will they or won't they? Beginning at 11:30 CT today on ESPN2 the NCAA Baseball Selection Committee will select 64 teams for NCAA Baseball Regionals. Will the NCAA Selection Committee choose Mississippi State as one of the 34 at-large teams (30 conference winning teams are automatic qualifiers)?

I predict they will.

Why do I believe they will you ask?

After looking at each conference throughout the NCAA, I came up with 25 teams for sure and 4 other possibilities, excluding SEC teams, that deserve at-large berths. That leaves at worst 5 and at best 9 at-large berths for the SEC. Obviously, the league, based on past history, won't get 9 at-large berths, but it tells me that the SEC will get at least 5 and maybe 7.

That means South Carolina (losers to Alabama in the SEC Tournament Championship game), Florida, LSU, Arkansas and Mississippi State are in and Auburn and Georgia may be in as well.

The reason I predict MSU will be selected over Georgia even though Georgia had a better conference record is because MSU was hotter at the end of the season, had a better road record and had a better overall record. MSU will be selected over Auburn because MSU had a better record within the Western Division, had a better road record and a better record against top-25 teams.

BTW, another reason the SEC will get at least 5 at-large berths is because history backs up that fact. The SEC has gotten at least 6 teams (1 automatic and 5 at-large) in each year since 1995. Two years during that span they got in 8 (2001) and 7 (1998).

Here is my list of at-large teams, excluding the SEC. The winners of each of the 29 conferences listed below (and the SEC Tournament champion) receive automatic bids. One independent, Miami, is also eligible for an at-large berth but will very likely not receive one this year due to its 30-26 record.

  • C-USA (3, maybe 4) - Houston, Louisville, Southern Miss. Tulane or TCU is a possibility.
  • Big-10 (1, maybe 2) - Minnesota. Maybe Michigan State.
  • Big-12 (4, maybe 5) - Texas Tech, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Baylor. Maybe OK. State.
  • American East (0) - None.
  • Atlantic Coast (4) - Wake Forest, Clemson, North Carolina, Ga. Tech.
  • Atlantic Sun (1) - Fla. Atlantic.
  • Atlantic 10 (1) - Richmond.
  • Big East (0) - None.
  • Big South (0) - None.
  • Big West (2) - Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State.
  • Colonial Athletic Association (1) - James Madison.
  • Horizon League (0) - None.
  • Ivy League (0) - None.
  • Metro Atlantic Athletic (0) - None.
  • Mid-American (0) - None.
  • Mid-Continent (0) - None.
  • Mid-Eastern (0) - None.
  • Missouri Valley (1, maybe 2) - Southwest Missouri State. Maybe Creighton.
  • Mountain West (1) - San Diego State.
  • Northeast (0) - None.
  • Ohio Valley (0) - None.
  • Pac-10 (3) - Arizona State, Stanford, Washington.
  • Patriot League (0) - None.
  • Southern (0) - None.
  • Southland (0) - None.
  • Southwest Athletic (0) - None.
  • Sun Belt (2) - South Alabama, La.-Lafayette.
  • Western Athletic (1) - San Jose State.
  • West Coast (0) - None.
  • Non-Conference (Independents) (0) - None.

    Now, we wait and see.
