Women's Tennis Season Opens at Home Feb. 2

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State's 33rd-ranked women's tennis team will open 2006 dual match action on Thursday, Feb. 2, hosting the Cougars of Houston at 3 p.m. at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre on the MSU campus.

The Lady Bulldogs are coming off one of the best seasons in school history last season with a 12-8 record and a Southeastern Conference Western Division title. The squad returns three letterwinners from a year ago and welcomes four newcomers to the 2006 team.

Thursday's match with UH is the second time the two schools have met on the tennis courts. The only previous match was during the 1987 campaign at the Florida State Invitational with the Cougars topping State 5-1.

UH won its first two matches of the season this past weekend, sweeping Stephen F. Austin and Prairie View A&M. They open up Conference USA action on Wednesday at Southern Mississippi.

MState continues its season-opening weekend on Saturday, Feb. 4, taking on the Trojans from Troy University. That match is set for 1 p.m.
