Women's Tennis Drops 4-3 Decision to Troy

STARKVILLE, Miss. – For the second consecutive match, the winning point came down to the final match as No. 33 Mississippi State dropped a 4-3 decision to the Trojans of Troy University at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre on Saturday.

The clinching point for the Trojans came at the No. 1 position in singles. Troy's Rawiaa Elsisi fought back from losing the opening set at 6-2 to State's Anastasia Kugakolova to win 6-4, 6-3 to claim the match.

After dropping the opening doubles point, the Maroon and White fought back in singles to even the score at three apiece. MState posted wins at the No. 4, 5 and 6 positions. Freshmen Martina Banikova prevailed in three sets over TU's Annabelle Bares 6-3, 6-1, 6-2. Elna de Villiers earned her first career dual match victory with a 6-0, 6-3 win. Tatiana Feit added MSU's final point with a 6-4, 6-4 decision.

The MSU doubles pairing of Kugakolova and Polina Kokoulina recorded their second consecutive win in doubles.

Head coach Tracy Lane's squad will travel to the state of Texas for two matches on Friday, Feb. 10 and Sunday, Feb. 12. MSU will face Rice at 3 p.m. in Houston, Texas and close out the trip with a meeting with the Mustangs of SMU on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
