McPherson Highlights Opening Day of Tyson In.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Mississippi State University senior Jen McPherson ran 4 minutes, 49.69 seconds to finish fifth in the indoor mile run championship to open competition for the Lady Bulldogs at the Tyson Invitational. The event is being held at the Randal Tyson Indoor Track Facility on the campus of the University of Arkansas.

"was real pleased with today's performances," said MSU head coach Al Schmidt. "That was the best Jen (McPherson) has run in a year-and-a-half. She'll be a contender for an SEC title in two weeks. Mina (Thorstenson) and Joy (Griffith) ran seasonal bests, as well. Gabrielle (Dillon) ran very well. It was worth coming over here. Our team is hanging in there with the top 25."

In the 5000-meter run, junior Mina Thorstenson ran a personal-best 17:32.42 to finish fifth and post the fourth-best time in school history. Junior Joy Griffith ran a season-best 17:37.62 to finish behind Thorstenson in sixth.

In the collegiate mile run, junior Liz Grube shaved seven seconds off her personal best to finish 16th in the event, running 5:01.66.

Despite not advancing out of the preliminaries, freshman Gabrielle Dillon improved her time in the 60-meter dash, coming across the finish line in 7.64. In the 60-meter hurdles, Marrissa Harris ran her second-best time of the season in 8.87. Following her season-ending injury from a year ago, senior Lauren Johnson leaped a season-best 17-10 ¾ in the long jump.
