Melvin Smith Comes Back Home

Mississippi State has just announced the hiring of Melvin Smith to the football staff.

Smith, who has spent the past five years coaching at Texas A&M and Alabama, was announced today. A Mississippi native, Smith coached at Mississippi State from 1995 to 2001, one of the most successful periods in Mississippi State football history. Known as an outstanding recruiter, Coach Smith brings 25 years coaching experience with him.

During his career, he has coached in 5 bowl games and has coached current or former NFL players Fred Smoot, Eric Moulds, Waine Bacon, Eric Brown and Robert Bean.

Smith's specific position responsibility has not yet been determined on Croom's coaching staff. Smith, however, has shown an ability to teach on both sides of the ball, having served six seasons as a defensive backfield coach following one year as the wide receivers coach during his initial stay in Starkville.
