Rozier, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound senior to be, is off to a great start with the 96ers. Last week, Rozier got a win and a save in 71/3 innings of work, allowing just one hit.
"We're very happy to have Matthew with us this summer. He's going to be a real asset to our team, and he will be a better player after this summer," said 96ers coach Derek Topic, the pitching coach at Madison Central High School. "He's pitching well for us, and he's working hard in the bullpen to get better."
Rozier's play isn't going unnoticed either. During a doubleheader last week in Madison, Rozier was clocked by Mississippi State assistant coaches at an average speed between 89-91 miles per hour.
Former Pillow Academy baseball coach Jack Henderson coached Rozier last summer in the State Games of Mississippi, and he says Rozier has a lot of potential.
"Hey, the kid throws in the high 80s and low 90s, so there are going to a be a lot of folks interested in him," Henderson explained. "I know Mississippi State is interested, because I filled out a questionnaire about him for (assistant Daron) Schoenrock."
During his junior season at Carroll Academy, a class AA member of the Mississippi Private School Association, Rozier put up impressive numbers: 113 strikeouts in 65 innings and an ERA of 1.26. Rozier knows it's important to put up similar numbers this summer.
"This is a great opportunity for me to show what I can do against great competition. This is a whole different game than I play in high school," Rozier explained. "I am pretty satisfied with the way I have been pitching. Playing with the 96ers gives all of us great exposure.
"I definitely want to play at the college level, so I want to stay healthy and continue to work hard. State is by far first on my list, but I'm not going to overlook anybody. I'm interested in Delta State and Meridian Community College."
Rozier, also a standout football player at running back and linebacker, is pondering whether or not to return to the gridiron for his senior season at Carroll. He says he may play fall baseball for the Mississippi Stars, another select traveling team.
