MS/AL All-Star Classic Update

[Premium article] MOBILE - Both 36-man teams arrived Sunday and the injuries began shortly thereafter for the Mississippi team, which appears laid back and oblivious to any hype surrounding the 15th Annual Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Football Classic.

Mississippi lineman Chauncey Brown of Columbus High twisted his ankle on the opening day of practices and another Mississippi lineman, center Brad Calcote, was grounded by heat dehydration and exhaustion.

No fewer than four Mississippi players stated words to the effect that it wouldn't be that big of a deal if they lost the game.

"We're just here to have fun," said Parys Haralson, a prep All-American defender from Madison Central who has signed with Tennessee.

After a meal of barbecue plus pork and beans, Mississippi team members gathered in the South endzone of vacant Ladd-Peebles Stadium on Monday to galavant and exchange stories prior to boarding a bus back to their dormitories.

Alabama players met the media, too, led by head coach Steve Savarese. It was Savarese who guided Daphne High to the 6A title this past season. Alabama players gathered in the middle of the North endzone and participated in a unified chant prior to leaving to board their bus.

Practices are 9-11 a.m. and 4-6 p.m. each day at various high school sites around Mobile and the region known as Lower Alabama.

Mississippi has made a total of five changes to its roster since the initial group of 36 players was released in January.

Moss Point lineman James McCoy was the first casualty, declaring months ago that he would be unavailable for the game due to rotator cuff surgery.

"I told the coaches I wanted to play and have the surgery later but the coaches at Ole Miss said I needed to go ahead and get my surgery so I could start healing for my college career," McCoy said this week.

Mississippi roster changes are as follows:

  • Columbia running back and Ole Miss signee Jamal Pittman replaced by Hernando running back and Mississippi State signee Kevin Dockery.
  • Starkville defensive back Julius Randle replaced by Madison Central defensive back Josh Henry.
  • Moss Point's offensive lineman and Ole Miss signee McCoy replaced by Horn Lake offensive lineman and Kentucky signee Jared McGowan.
  • South Panola linebacker and Ole Miss signee Chris Herring replaced by Jackson Provine center and Mississippi State signee Monte Collins (6-8, 360).

The Mississippi offensive line averages about 6-4, 300 pounds.
