UAB managed just seven hits against the Mississippi State hurlers, with Phillip Bell leading the way with his first three-hit game of the season. John Wayne Donahue also went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the green and gold. Danny Sawyer added two hits, and extended his team high hitting streak to 10 games.
The Blazers got out to an early lead, scoring one run in the bottom of the first inning. Bell started the rally, singling to left to open the frame. After Swayer was hit by a pitch and Donahue walked, the Blazers had the bases loaded. UAB would push its first run across when Zac Ward hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Bell and giving the green and gold its only lead of the night, 1-0.
Mississippi State would respond, scoring eight unanswered runs to take a commanding lead. UAB would try to play catch up, scoring two runs in the fifth to close the lead to 8-3. Levi Patmon reached on a walk, and was sent to third on Bell's second hit of the night, a double down the left field line. Donahue would clean up the basepaths, doubling off the right field wall to score two and cut into the Bulldog advantage.
However, Mississippi State foiled all chances at a UAB comeback, scoring 12 runs over the final four innings to put the game out of reach.
Sophomore right-hander Jon Crosby, now 2-0 on the season, picked up the victory for the Bulldogs.
The entire MSU lineup had at least one hit with Mitch Moreland and Thomas Berkery leading the 14-hit barrage with 2 hits apiece. Four Bulldog hitters had home runs - Moreland, Andy Rice, Joseph Hunter (a grandslam) and Joseph McCaskill.
MSU continues its two-game roadswing with a 6:30 p.m. game at Jacksonville State Wednesday night.
