State Clings To 8th In Race To Hoover

There are only two weekends remaining on the schedule, and still no SEC team has officially clinched a berth in the conference tournament field. For that matter no team has yet been absolutely eliminated from the eight-team field. As early as Friday evening, though, both facts could change.

At the top of the updated standings, new league-leader Kentucky is close to locking up their spot at Hoover. Claiming the regular-season championship and a top-seed in one of the brackets is another matter though as the race remains absurdly tight after eight weekends. The Wildcats, coached by Diamond Dog alumnus John Cohen, find themselves on top of the standings after a home sweep of Mississippi combined with Alabama's getting swept by Arkansas.

At the other end of the league ladder, by losing two-of-three at Mississippi State the Florida Gators not only have left themselves no margin for error on their own but will need near-total collapses by a couple of teams currently in the field to slip into eighth place.

Meanwhile, by winning their first SEC series since late March the Diamond Dogs were able to stay in that eighth place. But it's a tenuous grip at best, as streaking LSU has gone from near-dead in 11th place two weeks ago to stand only 20 percentage points behind State.

SEC standings are based on league won-lost percentage. The SEC Tournament is seeded that way 3-through-8, after the respective Division champions are given the top seeds in the respective brackets.
