Lee Chambers: Getting Ahead Academically

Lee Chambers is doing things a little different this summer. While many football players are attending football camps, working out and doing all the other things student-athletes normally do, Lee is going to class. And it's not your normal everyday summer school, but one that is preparing him for college life.

"Right now, I'm at Ole Miss taking summer school. I started Saturday. It's a program that my school has called Upward Bounds and it lasts the whole month of June. It's for all (high) schools in my area," said Lee, who like all the other youngsters in the program is staying in a dorm at Ole Miss as a way to experience the college life. "If you have an 85 or above GPA you get recommended by the program and get put in it. (The local school district) pay for everything for the summer. These courses go toward our curriculum in high school, but they are high school courses that let you get used to the college life. I'm taking three courses. I'll only have to take four classes (my senior) year, but I am taking an extra class just to have that extra edge."

As for recruiting, his status continues to rise in the recruiting world.

"I have two more offers since I last talked to you, Arkansas State and Tulsa. They offered the week before the 19th (of May), " commented Lee. He already had offers from Mississippi State, South Carolina, Southern Miss, Alabama, Florida State, Louisville, Ole Miss, Michigan, Miami and Tennessee.

While he has a gang of offers, he also received almost as many May evaluation calls as he has offers.

"Schools that called me during May were Southern Miss, Miami, Mississippi State, Alabama, Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee, Louisville, Michigan and Florida State," noted Lee. "I just talked to the coach from Tennessee Tuesday (May 29th)."

While he won't have much time for college summer camps, he will attend one and unofficially visit a couple of other schools.

"I'm attending the Alabama camp June 11th. I will probably go to Mississippi State, but I probably won't go to their camp," said Lee. "(MSU head) Coach (Sylvester) Croom said I don't have to participate in the camp. They already know they want me real bad. He told me on the phone that he wants me to come ride around in the golf cart with him. I will also probably go on an unofficial visit to Miami."

As for favorites, he has six on his radar screen.

"Mississippi State, South Carolina, Southern Miss, Alabama, Miami and Michigan are my favorites," said Lee, who confirmed with the Scout.com South Carolina site that MSU is his clear leader.
