Football and basketball rosters are here!....

As I told you in last week's Monday Morning Coffee Break, TheInsiders' engineering team has been hard at work creating software that would allow each college site to have its own expanded football and basketball rosters. Well, they are now in place and the rosters have been added to the left side of each college team page. You can find them in the Scout Database section.

While the roster modules have been added, Mary Ann and I are working on each player and should have most of the players included on the roster later this week. Unlike other MSU rosters, I am going to make sure all players - scholarship and walk-ons - are included. While we will have most of the names added this week, a few of the walk-ons won't be added until classes resume.

A special feature of the rosters will be a link (player's name) to a detail page for each player. Included on that page will be general information such as name, a photograph of the player, his jersey number, position, height, weight, 40-speed, date of birth, birth place, classification, high school and junior college (if applicable). I will also include a biography of each player. The bio will include where he played high school and junior college (if applicable) and honors earned. The bio will also include his career at Mississippi State.

One thing that truly makes the detail page special is the ability to include all TheInsiders stories written about each player. What that means is any story (free or premium) written by me or anyone else within TheInsiders network about a player that is currently on the MSU roster will be linked on the detail page. And it won't be just stories written while the player is currently at MSU. It will also include recruiting articles written about the player before he signed with MSU. Please take into consideration the recruiting stories will only go back to last year's recruits. TheInsiders network wasn't around prior to that.

You will also notice in the Scout Database directly beneath the current football roster is a NFL Bulldogs link (basketball has this same kind of link except for the NBA). That is a list of former MSU players that are currently on NFL rosters. Each player will have the same type of detail page going back to their career at MSU. Of course the stories from MSU will be limited to last year's players only.

These detail pages will be a great way to follow current players from their high school career, to their college career and on into their NFL or NBA careers.

There will also be a basketball roster that will be similar to the football roster. Mary Ann and I will add players to it as soon as we are through with the football roster.

I believe you will really enjoy the football and basketball rosters and their detail pages.

Before you ask, any article on the detail page that has a red star by it is viewable by premium subscribers only.

Summer league Bulldog players update.

Senior Brian Owens, playing for Jackson in the Cotton States League, pitched a 7-inning complete game victory this past Thursday night, July 11. He allowed 1 unearned run while striking out 13 and walking 3.

Junior Brent Lewis and senior Matthew Maniscalco, both playing for the Orleans Cardinals of the Cape Cod League, are hitting .247 and .217. Junior Steve Gendron, playing in the same league but for a different team (Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox), is hitting .241. Before you start worrying about their hitting stats, please remember that the Cape Cod League is a wooden bat league. It is tough on hitters who are used to the aluminum bats. BTW, only 8 hitters eligible for the hitting crown are batting above .300. The top-hitting team is Yarmouth-Dennis with a .251 average.

In the CICL League, the Danville Dans has three MSU players on their team, redshirt freshmen Winston Pearson and Brad Jones and sophomore Saunders Ramsey. Winston is batting .191 with 1 homer and 6 RBIs, while Brad is hitting .195 with no home runs and 16 RBIs. Brad, playing first base, has committed just 1 error in 34 games (.995 fielding percentage). Saunders, in 16 appearances, has 8 saves (ties for second in the league) and a 1-1 record. He also has a 1.93 earned run average.

Traveling over to the Coastal Plain League, redshirt freshman Thomas Berkery, playing for the Edenton Steamers, continues to lead the league in home runs with 7. Hitting .274 (up from .266 last week), he also is tied for the RBI lead with 24. Sophomore Todd Nicholas, playing for the same team, has a 2-2 record with an earned run average of 3.99 in 38.1 innings. He has allowed 38 hits, walked 21 and struck out 23. Senior Steven Dowe, playing for the Durham Americans, has a 2-0 record with 5 saves and a 3.00 earned run average in 14 appearances.

Several MSU players are in the Clark Griffith League. Sophomore J.B. Tucker, playing for the Reston Hawks, is batting .397 with 2 home runs and 18 RBIs in 68 plate appearances. Redshirt freshman Jake Ociesa, playing on the same team, has a 1-3 record with a 4.64 earned average, while appearing in 5 games (all starts). In 33 innings, he has allowed 26 hits, while walking 19 and striking out 31. In the Shenandoah Valley League, redshirt freshman catcher, Craig Tatum, playing for the Covington Lumberjacks, is also doing well, hitting .327 in 17 games. Junior Robby Goodson, playing for the Waynesboro Generals, has not allowed a run in 8 innings of relief pitching. He has a 3-0 record with 2 saves. Redshirt freshman Jamie Gant, playing for the Front Royal Cardinals has an 0-3 record in 4 starts. He has pitched 16 innings, giving up 20 hits, 14 walks, while striking out 21. He has a 7.56 earned run average. I believe all three players must have gone back to school or home for the summer since their stats haven't changed from last week. JoJo Haney was playing for the Front Royal team, but injured his shoulder and had surgery on it.

Les Dykes, playing for the Bolittieri, Fla. team in the Florida Collegiate League, seems to be slowing turning it around after having a good outing last Monday. Les threw 3 innings, allowing no runs on no hits and four walks, while striking out 3.

MSU baseball players Brett Cleveland and Jon Mungle, playing for the Saint Joseph Saints in the MINK League, have done well. Brett is hitting .311 with 1 home run and 12 RBIs in 61 official at-bats. Prior to leaving, Jon hit .290 with 3 RBIs in 31 official at-bats. Brett has also appeared in 6 games as a pitcher, winning 4 and losing 1. He has pitched 30 inning, while allowing 25 hits and 3 walks and striking out 28. His earned run average is 2.10
