First, what have you been doing this summer?
"I've been working out and lifting weights and just getting ready for the season. I also went to the beach for a week and I have worked in a few summer baseball camps teaching baseball."
Are you going to summer school?
"No. I'm headed up there Friday but I'm not going to take any classes. I'm just going to workout on my own and get ready and learn my way around school."
I see. You just want to get adjusted to things.
Well, let's talk about baseball first. You guys went pretty far in the playoffs, did you not?
"We went to the semi-finals."
How did you do?
"I did pretty good. I ended up batting right at .500 with 12 homeruns and 57 RBIs."
That is pretty good. What position did you play?
"I played center field and I pitched some."
Are you projected as a center fielder or a pitcher in college?
"I really don't have a clue. I've heard third base because I played 3rd for two years until we had a shortage of outfielders. I've played first some, too. I probably won't be a pitcher, but I don't know. It'll probably be on the corners or in the outfield somewhere."
Justin, let me ask you this. MSU has had a few players come in before who signed as two-sport players but something happened along the way and they only ended up playing one. I guess what I'm asking you is how committed are you to playing both sports?
"I'm pretty committed. As long as it doesn't kill me academically, I plan to play both."
Now, are you on full scholarship in football or did they split that somehow?
"I'm on full football scholarship."
So you're going to be on football scholarship and walkon in baseball. Are you going to go out for baseball your freshman year?
Has coach Polk talked to you about the possibility of playing time or redshirt or anything?
"No, he has not said anything about it so I don't know."
What about in football? Have the coaches said anything to you about playing time?
"All I have been told is that I need to come in and learn the system and compete. I could have a chance if I can get the system down, but there is a chance of redshirting."
What do you think about the quarterback situation there now?
"I don't really know all of them but I remember that all of them are pretty good. So its going to be some good competition."
What do you bring to the position?
"People say that I have a strong arm and that I scramble pretty good."
What is your speed now?
"I ran a 4.68 the last time I was timed."
Wow! Thats pretty good for a guy your size. Speaking of which, what is your size now?
"I'm up to about 225. So I've gained a little bit of weight." (Justin is 6-4)
Let's talk about the upcoming season. Do you think we have a shot at winning the Oregon game?
"I do. I think they lost a few key players. I think we have a real good shot at winning that game."
What would you think if you were to come in and win a job, make the travel squad, and actually suit up for that game?
"I would really like to do that. I would mean a lot to me to walk in and suit up for the first game. Then I might be one play from playing if something bad happened. I'm sure I would be nervous."
Did you get a chance to watch the Mississippi/Alabama all-star game on TV?
"Yes. I thought some of our guys did pretty well in that game."
What do you think of this class you signed with?
"From all I've heard, its a real good class. I went up there and I think all 19 of us that were there that weekend signed. They are all really nice guys."
Thanks for your time.
