First, what's your summer been like so far?
"It has been busy. After graduation, I had been working out all the way through because I was on the track team. I went to the State championships for the shot-put and discus. And then I had a week at home. After that, I went to play football in the Tenn.(/ Kentucky) all-star game. After I got back from the all-star game, I left going to St. Louis and then I left again on another trip and now I'm just getting back."
So you have been traveling a lot?
"Oh yeah, it's been busy."
Well, I'm guessing that since you are home, you are not going to the second summer term?
"Oh, no. I'm not going."
When do you plan to report?
"August the 2nd."
What kind of workouts have you been doing this summer?
"I have been doing a lot of traveling and I haven't been able to work out that much. But I have been running a lot. I will run 40's and some miles around the track."
If I remember right, you gained some weight between your junior and senior years - right?
"Yes, sir. My junior year I was like 235 and my senior year my playing weight was 265."
What are you now?
"Right now I'm 285. But it hasn't slowed me down."
So you are carrying it well. But you are pretty tall, right?
What are you benching and squatting right now?
"I really can't say. I haven't been working out that much. I'm not that strong, but I know how to block."
Well, speaking of that, what position will you play at State?
"Well, I was recruited at the center position. As far as what they have been telling me, they want me to stay where I am or at least on the offensive line. But I don't have a problem playing any of the other positions on the line."
Yeah. I'm just thinking that if you are 6-6 and you have long arms and move well, then you are looking at playing tackle right?
Do you feel like pass blocking is something you can do?
"Oh, yeah. I like pass blocking. It's kind of easy, I don't know why. Some people seem to shy away from it but I like it."
Have you ever played tackle?
"Not really. I played in a game at tackle. My 10th grade year I played a few games there but not much."
Well, what are your expectations of this coming year?
"I'm probably looking at redshirting, which doesn't bother me at all. But the one thing I told the coaches, is that even if I redshirt, I still want to make the academic team. I'm not too worried about starting - it would be nice, but come on, I am 6-6, and around 280, I don't have that much mass. 280 is small on the MSU line. It would probably be better if I redshirted and got used to it all."
That's probably a good way to look at it. I appreciate your time James.
