PG Gary Ervin to Join the MSU Basketball Family

[Premium article] One of the top fifty basketball players in the nation, Paul Robeson School of Business (New York City) point guard Gary Ervin (5-11, 170), has committed to Mississippi State. Gary will sign with State in November. Gene's Page caught up with Gary Tuesday for an early morning interview.

Gary, who went to Paul Robeson School of Business in New York city this past season, will be attending Notre Dame Prep School in Fitchburg, MA. this coming season. Gary is rated the 43rd best players in the nation and the 8th best point guard by ESPN.com. TheInsiders.com ranks him nationally among the top 75 players in the nation and the 18th best point guard. He joins previous commitment Travis Outlaw, a consensus national top 10 to 15 player. Gary chose MSU over Arizona, UConn, Alabama, Pittsburgh, Providence, Maryland, Memphis, North Carolina State, Temple, and numerous other schools.

Gary, I'm calling to find out if you have committed to Mississippi State.
"Yeah."

When did you commit?
"Yesterday."

Tell me a little about yourself? What are some things you are good at?
"I can penetrate and get my ball to my teammates. I can also shoot." [A few recruiting experts also consider one of Gary's strongest attributes to be his toughness on the court.-Gene]

Tell me a little about your team. I know you guys were really good the past two seasons.
"We've only had seven losses in the last 70+ games." (His team went to the city finals the past two seasons.-Gene)

Weren't you player of the year in New York city this past season?
"Yes."

That's a great honor considering it was for New York city.
"Yes, it is a real big honor for me."

What were your stats for the past two seasons?
"The last two seasons I had 16 points, 9 assists 9 rebounds and 4 steals and 30 points, 10 assists, and 8 rebounds."

Switching over to recruiting. What was it that you liked about Mississippi State?
"I liked the team chemistry. I liked the coaches. It is a good environment where I can focus on playing basketball and school. It is a good situation for me because they have a senior this season and I can come in and play right away."

What coach primarily recruited you for Mississippi State?
"Phil Cunningham."

What did you think about him?
"He is a real cool guy."

How long has Mississippi State been recruiting you?
"Since last year."

Are you going to sign with Mississippi State in November?
"Yeah."

I know you are transferring to Notre Dame prep. Are you excited about transferring there?
"Yeah, they are a real good school. Last year, they had 6 kids who went to the Big East and 1 kid who went to the SEC, Brandon Robertson, so it is a pretty good school, a good environment."
