TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - MSU's ITA South Regional Championships' competition moved indoors in day one action due to rain. Only one round of one draw (A) was completed due to consistent downpours.
Starting the day off in the A Draw, State's Martina Banikova came on strong late, but ultimately fell 6-0, 7-6(6) to Miami's Caren Seenauth. Valeriya Makarycheva fell 6-3, 6-3 to Christy Striplin of Georgia Tech. Wrapping up play in the A Draw for State, Renee Joseph dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Jessica Wente of Florida State. All three MSU players will compete in first-round singles consolation matches on Friday.
Due to the weather, the second round of the A Draw and all B Draw matches were pushed back to Friday. Elna de Villiers will open up the day for MSU, facing Maya Miladinovic of Stetson. Tatiana Feit will meet South Florida's Ann-Marie Madric and Lady Bulldog Daniela Juskova will wind up State's B competition against Florida A&M's Samaria Bailey.
Banikova along with de Villiers will hit the court in doubles play, matching up against the 33rd-ranked doubles team of Whitney Benik and Nina Suvak of Florida. Joseph and Makarycheva will receive a first-round bye on Friday.
STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Mississippi State men's tennis team will compete this weekend (Oct. 20-23) at the ITA Southeast Regional Indoor Championships in Lexington, Ky. The tournament will take place at the Boone Tennis Center on the UK campus and the Lexington Raquet Club.
Sophomores Ryan Farlow and Eric Lim will be the first to play Friday, beginning in qualifying singles. In order to qualify for the main draw, they must win their first match. Farlow, a native of Madison, is coming off one of the best performances of his young career. Farlow won four consecutive matches and reached the finals of flight B singles at the Georgia Tech Invitational two weeks ago.
Four Bulldogs will begin play in the main draw. Ivan Bjelica, Philippe Frayssinoux along with freshmen Artem Kuznetsov and Pjotrs Necajevs. Bjelica is currently ranked 42nd-nationally while Frayssinoux enters the tournament having won six of his last eight matches.
Three doubles teams will also compete in the tournament. Bjelica will pair with Frayssinoux, Farlow will team with Lim while the freshman pair of Kuznetsov and Necajevs will compete together.
Play will get under way Friday at 7 a.m. CT with qualifying followed by the first round of main-draw singles and the first round of doubles. The finalists of singles and the doubles champions will advance to the ITA National Indoor Championships on Nov. 2-5 in Columbus, Ohio.
