STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State freshman forward Tysheka Grimes has been named the Southeastern Conference Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week and sophomore guard Bethany Workman has been named to the 2006-07 Community Service Team, as announced by the league office in Birmingham today.
Grimes recorded her first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds vs. Grambling on Dec. 19 and followed with a season-high 16 points and 10 rebounds against New Orleans on Dec. 21 to become the first Lady Bulldog since Robin Porter (2-5-06 and 2-9-06) to record a double-double in back-to-back games.
Against the Lady Privateers, the Baton Rouge, La.-native hit a season-high three three-point field goals and attempted a season-high 16 field goals. On the week, Grimes tallied 27 points, 20 rebounds, four assists, two blocks, a steal and averaged 11-of-24 (.458) shooting. She also shot 42.9 percent from behind the arc.
Workman, a native of Springtown, Texas, was named to the SEC Community Service Team for the second consecutive year. Workman participated in a mission trip to Kenya this summer with World Changers International. She has also helped at the Starkville Church of God's Compassion Kitchen and with Bully's Book Blitz. Workman is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and MClub and participates in various other community service activities with both organizations.
Workman was awarded the Sonny Mullins Community Service Award last season and is a member of the Shackouls Honors College at MSU.
This marks the ninth year for the SEC Community Service Team for women's basketball, as well as men's basketball. All 20 league-sponsored sports have had a Community Service Team since 2004, with at-large teams for men's and women's sports being chosen from 1999-2003. The SEC began this concept with a football Community Service Team in 1994. Women's basketball players already honored this season are Juanitta Wallace (Auburn) and Eleia Roddy (Kentucky).
Grimes and Workman along with the rest of the Lady Bulldogs return to action Dec. 29-30 at the Georgia Tech Holiday Tournament.
