Richardson received interest from several colleges. Cole took official visits to Millsaps and Southern Miss before deciding to take Mississippi State up on their offer to walk on as a placekicker.
"I had been looked at by some smaller colleges, but I felt that it would be better for me to go to Mississippi State," said Cole. "I have always wanted to go to Mississippi State. They invited me to walk-on, so that's where I am going."
Richardson was recruited by the Bulldogs and will be treated as an invited walk-on.
"I like it there and I like the coaches," said Cole. "They told me that I would get a chance whenever my time came. I just like the way they were talking and I felt it was a good opportunity."
With Eric Richards signing on Wednesday, the Bulldogs appear to be bringing in two of the best kicking specialists in the state of Mississippi. Richards was named All-State as a punter and is one of the most consistent kickoff specialists in the state.
"I am more of a field goal guy," said Cole. "I kicked off in high school because I was a little better at it than our punter. I specialize more in field goal kicking, but I can do both. I met Eric (Richards) at the Ray Guy camp. He has a real powerful leg. He really has some pop in it."
For Cole the chance to wear the Maroon and White is a dream come true.
"My dad went to State and we have relatives that went to State, so I have always been around Mississippi State stuff," said Cole. "I have made a few visits up there and I have just always liked it there. I enjoy the gameday atmosphere up there. I am looking forward to being a part of it all."
Richardson tabs Scott Westerfield as his favorite Bulldog kicker due to Scott's ability to make kicks in the clutch.
