So Who's Next?

The Mississippi State Bulldogs gained their first verbal commitment towards the 2008 signing class late Monday evening when Biggersville's Montario "ToJo" Patterson made his pledge. With junior day just a few days away, could a rash of verbal commitments be in store?

One of the things Bulldog fans can rest assured about is that Mississippi State will not have 34 verbal commitments towards the 2008 class. If the numbers work out as expected it will be slightly above half that number.

Last week ToJo Patterson told us that he was likely headed to Mississippi State to wear the maroon and white. Just a few short days after receiving his written scholarship offer, Patterson made the call and ended his college recruitment.

With Patterson now in the fold, who are the most likely candidates to join him as early verbal commitments for Sly Croom's Bulldogs.

Delmon Robinson - Robinson has made his affinity for the Bulldogs no secret. A repeat camper in multiple sports on the Starkville campus, Robinson picked up an offer from Mississippi State several weeks back. At this time the chances of Robinson becoming a Bulldog seem very good. Delmon is unsure of the timing of his decision, but he is expected to attend Mississippi State's Junior day this weekend. The Vicksburg Gator lists former Bulldog CB David Heard as someone he looks up to.

Devin Jones - Upon receiving the news of his offer from Mississippi State, Jones said he was ready to sign right then and there. After seeking the counsel of his coaches and family, Devin has taken some time to think about things. Since receiving his first offer, several other schools have shown interest. Jones decision may not be one that comes for some time, but he is very high on the idea of playing closer to home.

Dominique Davenport - Davenport is one of the more recent recepients of a Bulldog offer. He really wants to play in the SEC and wants to stay closer to home. Baldwyn is just down the road from the MSU campus. Davenport camped at Mississippi State last summer and drew lots of attention from Bulldog DB coach Melvin Smith. The chances of Dominique wearing maroon and white appear very good at this time.

Mystery Prospect - While we would love to sit here and tell you we know it all, we do not. Dakota Merritt, Korentheus Bailey and Dominic Douglas all caught us a little off guard last year. There are some out of state prospects that probably hold offers that we are not aware of yet. Throw in the possibility that some in state prospects may decide to pull the trigger after visiting the campus this weekend and things could pick up very soon. Things are often unpredictable, but we expect to some news in the few days following junior day.

The 2007 high school commitments started coming in a fairly rapid pace just after junior day. We expect a similar pattern this year, but with scholarship spots more limited this season the announcements will certain be fewer in number.
