MSU Ready for Super Bulldog Weekend

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Super Bulldog Weekend began 22 years ago as an opportunity for MSU alumni and fans to return to the campus in the spring and enjoy a weekend of athletic events and activities. From its inception, Super Bulldog Weekend has proven to be an event full of fun for the entire family.

As the spring homecoming weekend nears its second decade on the MSU campus, the 2007 version will offer the same kind of enjoyment for the Bulldog fan. The 22nd annual SBW begins this Friday, March 30, and runs through Sunday, April 1.

Head football coach Sylvester Croom unveils his fourth Bulldog team at the spring practice-ending final game-like scrimmage, set for 12 noon this Saturday, the 31st. It will be held in Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field.

Bulldog fans will be admitted to the east side of the stadium only. Gates on both the north and south side of the east side will open at 11 a.m. Tickets are $5 apiece for the spring game, with booths opening at 10:30 a.m.

Head coach Ron Polk's baseball team plays a weekend Southeastern Conference series with Kentucky. The Diamond Dawgs will entertain the Wildcats at Dudy Noble Field/Polk-Dement Stadium on Friday at 6:30 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m., and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

While football and baseball have long been staples of SBW activities, another old favorite returns. The 22nd annual Pig Cooking Contest will once again take place on the MSU campus. The pig-cooking area will run along Lakeview Drive between Humphrey Coliseum and the Bryan Athletic Administration Building. Lakeview will be closed between the back entrance to the Coliseum and the outfield entrance to Dudy Noble Field beginning at 8 a.m. Friday. The road will not be re-opened until following Saturday's baseball game.

Pig cookers can begin setting up their rigs at 8 a.m. Friday, with the contest running 9 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday. MSU fans are encouraged to enjoy a fine sampling from the grill beginning at 4 p.m. Friday and again Saturday starting at 11 a.m. Both samplings are courtesy of Mississippi Farm Bureau and Mississippi Pork Producers Association. During Friday's 4 p.m. sampling a concert will be presented by BARK, a volunteer group of musicians headed by MSU President Robert H. "Doc" Foglesong.

Recreational vehicle owners are reminded that their parking areas will not be available until Friday at 5 p.m.

The MSU State Farm Fan Fair, featuring interactive games and exhibits, face painting, free photos with Bully, and autograph opportunities runs from 9 a.m. until noon Saturday. Fan Fair activities will be held adjacent to the pig cooking area on the upper parking lot of the Shira Complex.

Other athletic activities during SBW include a three-game softball series. The Bulldogs will host South Carolina, beginning with a 1 p.m. double-header on Saturday and concluding with a single game on Sunday, also in a 1 p.m. start.

A pair of State tennis matches will be contested during the weekend. On Friday, MSU's women's tennis team will welcome Arkansas at 2 p.m., while men's tennis entertains LSU on Sunday at 1 p.m.

MSU's track program will host two events during the weekend – the Bulldog High School Invitational on Friday beginning at Noon, and the Bulldog Invitational Saturday starting at 8 a.m. and running through late afternoon. Both meets will be held at Spencer Stadium/Maddox Track.

Finally, a pair of State sports will hold their alumni games Saturday morning, with volleyball playing at 9 a.m. at the Newell-Grissom Building and soccer at 10 a.m. at the MSU Soccer Field.
