STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State freshman Chelsea Bramlett was named SEC Freshman of the Week after helping the Bulldogs to a series sweep of South Carolina.
In four games, the Cordova, Tenn. native hit .571 (8-14) with five runs, two RBI and a double. She also slugged had a .643 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage. Bramlett helped MSU to its first win at the M&F Bank Fastpitch Classic over Ole Miss, before leading the Bulldogs to a three-game sweep of South Carolina, its first home conference sweep since April 16-17, 2005 over Arkansas.
In Sunday's series clincher, she tied a season-high with four hits, scoring twice. Bramlett also set an MState record with four stolen bases in the game. She is currently first in the conference with 39 runs and 56 hits. She is also second in stolen bases (33) and tied for fifth in average (.415). Bramlett also leads the team with eight doubles and 67 total bases, and paces MSU with a .496 slugging percentage and a .451 on-base percentage.
Her 33 stolen bases is a freshman record, and currently ranks fifth all-time in a season at State. Bramlett has stolen 28 consecutive bases, third all-time.
This is the first weekly honor earned by a Mississippi State player this year.
State will travel to Birmingham, Ala. on Wednesday to face Samford in a non-conference game at 6:00 p.m. before returning to conference play this weekend against Ole Miss.
