MSU Baseball Notes

A few, quick facts about how Mississippi State baseball has fared so far this season.

Upcoming Schedule - The Bulldogs play at home Tuesday night (6:30 p.m.) against Louisiana-Monroe (19-10). Gametime is set for 6:30 p.m. After playing South Carolina and Kentucky, both of whom were among the top 10 teams in the country at the time MSU played them, MSU goes on the road for their next two SEC series - at Arkansas (22-8, 7-2, 1st in the SEC West) and at Tennessee (17-12, 4-5, 5th in the SEC East). MSU's next oppponent, Arkansas, is currently ranked 3rd, 6th and 7th in the latest polls and has a 11-2 record at home.

Hitting - State remains second in the SEC in hitting with a .349 batting average. MSU is also one of two SEC teams that has three of their hitters among the top ten in the SEC - Brandon Turner and Edward Easley are tied for 4th with a .426 batting average while Mitch Moreland is 10th with a .384 BA. State also has seven hitters among the top 25 in the SEC - Joseph McCaskill (11th, .375), Jeffrey Rea (18th, .355), Connor Powers (23rd, .347) and Mark Goforth (24th, .346). No other SEC team has more than five.

Starting Pitching - MSU's starting pitchers haven't fared as well as the hitters. Aaron Weatherford (3-1, 4.91), Justin Pigott (2-3, 6.80) and Josh Johnson (2-1, 6.60) are among the bottom 10 in earned run average in the SEC.

Who's Hot, Who's Not - During the Kentucky series, Turner was scorching hot, hitting .667 (8-for-12 with 4 RBI). Easley hit .455 (5-for-11, 3 RBI) and Goforth hit .400 in limited action (2-for-5). The only other hitters over .300 were Moreland, McCaskill and Powers. All hit .308 (4-for-13).

Last 10 Games Record - State is 7-3 in its last 10 games. Six of the ten were against top 10 ranked opponents. State was 3-3 against them. Nine of the ten games were at home.

Freshmen Update - Redshirt freshman Brandon Turner, the top hitting freshman in the SEC with a .426 BA (4th overall in the SEC), was named this week's SEC Freshman of the Week. True freshman Connor Powers is currently hitting .347, which places him 23rd overall in the SEC and the third best batting average by a freshman. Redshirt freshman Ricky Bowen is second overall in the SEC in saves with 4. He leads all freshmen in saves. He also has 3 wins. He has appeared in 13 games, which ties him for 10th best in the SEC.

Comparing Last Year's Record to This Year's Record - State is currently 18-7 overall and 5-4 in the SEC. At this time last year State was 22-3 and 5-3 in the SEC.
