MSU Athletics
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State placed 76 student-athletes on the 2007 Southeastern Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll, released Wednesday by the league office. That figure was third most among league schools in the sports in which MSU competes. Only Florida with 86 honorees, and South Carolina (85) in the 16 sports in which State fields teams, exceeded the MSU total.

The honor roll is based upon grades from the 2006 Summer, 2006 Fall and 2007 Spring terms, and requires student-athletes to have a 3.0 grade point average during the period.

Mississippi State placed 20 student-athletes on the list from baseball, 15 from women's track and field, 13 from softball, 12 from men's track and field, five from both women's golf and women's tennis, four from men's golf and two from men's tennis.

Following USC, Florida and Mississippi State on the list were Arkansas (75), Tennessee (69), LSU (63), Georgia (59), Vanderbilt (58), Alabama (57), Kentucky (57), Mississippi (53), and Auburn (38). Again, those numbers coming in the 16 sports in which MSU competes.

Men's Golf
WHEATON, Ill. - Mississippi State sophomore golfer Josh Bevell completed the second round of the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship on Wednesday at Cantigny Golf Club. Bevell missed the cut of the top 64 players that advanced to the match play portion of the week-long event in Wheaton, Ill.

The U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship is one of 13 sanctioned championships of the United States Golf Association. With Bevell's appearance in the 2007 Public Links Championships, MSU has been represented in a USGA amateur event in the past three years. State head golf Coach Clay Homan and departed senior Greg Huxman qualified for the 2005 and 2006 U.S. Amateur Championship respectively.

Bevell finished the last three holes of his second round on Wednesday after rain halted play on Tuesday. The Southaven, Miss.-product posted a round of 82 and finished stroke play 133 (+17). He opened the national event with a 7-over par 77.

The amateur public links championship is devoted to the players who compete on public courses throughout the nation. To be eligible to compete in the event, players must have amateur status by the beginning of the year and not be a bona fide member of a club.
