Gulf Coast Community College and MUW will open play at the tournament on Saturday at high noon, before MUW gives way to the Bulldogs who will take on Gulf Coast at 2 p.m. Mississippi State will close out Saturday's tournament play at 4 p.m. against MUW. On Sunday, Jones County JC and Delta State will open up the day's action at 1 p.m., followed by a Mississippi State/Delta State contest at 3 and an MSU/Jones County matchup at 5.
The tournament will mark the first significant look for head coach Jay Miller, who was named MSU's fourth head coach in August. Miller and his assistant coaches, Annie Smith and Bo Reid, have worked tirelessly with their squad since fall workouts opened and are very anxious to see their team in game situations.
"The players and coaches have worked very hard and I am very anxious to see our progress," Miller said. "Each and every player has given me 110 percent from day one and I am very pleased with their work ethic. We are very excited about the prospects of seeing different opponents."
The Bulldogs return seven starters and two starting pitchers from its 36-26 squad which advanced to NCAA Regional 3 in Lafayette, La., last season. Two of MSU's players, then-senior Kellie Wilkerson and current junior Iyhia McMichael earned first team all-SEC accolades along the way.
