Although it wasn't pretty, the MSU football team won their 2nd game of the season behind a defense that recorded 6 interceptions, 3 by true freshman defensive back Darren Williams.

Now 2-4 on the season, the team travels to Memphis to play the Memphis Tigers next Saturday night at 7 p.m.

Some of the recruits that were in attendance:

  • Patrician Academy offensive lineman Brian Anderson.
  • Baldwyn HS junior quarterback Blake Barnes.
  • Baldwyn HS running back Willis Beene.
  • Starkville HS running back Xavier Collier.
  • Noxubee County HS quarterback Omar Conner.
  • Oak Grove HS offensive lineman John Davis.
  • Lee Academy (Clarksdale, MS) quarterback Bradford Foster.
  • Starkville HS offensive lineman Lance Fremin.
  • Jim Hill HS wide receivers Jason Husband.
  • Clarksdale HS defensive back Fernando Matthews.
  • Amory HS tight end Linzy Patterson.
  • Baldwyn HS offensive lineman Trey Powell.
  • Baldwyn HS wide receiver Channing Price.
  • Hernando HS linebacker/defensive end Deljuan Robinson.
  • Noxubee County HS wide receiver Joey Sanders.

Speaking of recruits, MSU picked up a big-time commitment when Columbus (MS) High School linebacker Quinton McCrary (6-3, 225, 4.52) told the Commercial Dispatch that he has decided to cast his lot with the Bulldogs. Quinton, who told me in June that he already had offered from West Virginia, Florida, Arkansas, Auburn, Memphis and Mississippi State, chose the Bulldogs because he wants to stay close to home and because he feels confident that they will be back on the winning track soon. Quinton was chosen the Commercial Dispatch Defensive Player of the year after recording almost 180 tackles last season.

MSU now has 4 confirmed commitments:

  • J.J. Grant, LB/DE, Butler CC (KS)
  • Chris Swain, DB, Jones JC (MS).
  • Ken Griffith, LB, Brandon (MS) HS.
  • Quinton McCrary, LB, Columbus (MS) HS.

Approximately 3,000 Mississippi State fans attended last Friday night's MSU basketball's Maroon Madness. They were treated to scrimmages by both the women's and men's teams. The highlight of the evening was the dunking exhibition by the men's team. While everybody knew about the high flying duo of Derrick Zimmerman and Timmy Bowers, the crowd was delighted to see the high flying exhibition of true freshman newcomer Michael Boler. Michael did a 360 degree dunk that brought a roar from the crowd.

Both teams are presently going through practices awaiting the beginning of what is expected to be outstanding seasons.

MSU commitment Travis Outlaw attended the event.

The annual Banana Split Series, which continues Monday night at 7:30, has the White team leading 2-1.

The White team defeated the Maroon team Sunday afternoon 2-1 behind the 10th inning, two-out RBI single by juco transfer Tyler Scarbrough.

Players who have hit the ball well during the first three games include the following:

  • True freshman centerfielder Joseph Hunter is 4 of 8 with a double. He is the only player to have gotten a hit in all three games.
  • Redshirt freshman outfielder Ryan Fesmire is 3 of 7.
  • True freshman leftfielder Jeff Butts is 3 of 6.
  • Junior college transfer infielder Tyler Scarbrough is 3 of 8 with 2 RBIs.
  • Redshirt freshman infielder Jo Jo Haney is 3 of 5 with an RBI.
  • Sophomore catcher J. B. Tucker is 4 of 8 with two doubles.

Pitchers who have thrown the ball well include the following:

  • Junior LHP Paul Maholm has struck out 7 in 4 innings. He gave up 1 hit, 0 walks and 0 runs.
  • Redshirt sophomore LHP Todd Nicholas, in 4 innings, allowed 0 runs on 2 hits and 3 walks. He struck out 7..
  • Redshirt freshman RHP Brett Cleveland has allowed 1 run on 6 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings. He struck out 5..
  • True freshman LHP Brooks Dunn has allowed 1 unearned run on 1 hit and 4 walks, while striking out 5.
  • Senior RHP Jacob Blakeney has thrown 6.2 innings, allowing 1 run on 6 hits and 3 walks. He has struck out 9.
  • True freshman RHP Michael Valentine , in 4 innings, has allowed 1 run on 0 hits and 4 walks. He has recorded 6 strikeouts.

By the way, MSU had at least one official visitor in this past weekend. He was Patrick Ezell from Petal, Mississippi. Patrick is a 6-1, 170-pound, hard-throwing, righthanded pitcher. He and his parents were at the Maroon and White game last Friday night.

So far, MSU has 6 commitments:

  • Josh Johnson, 6-1, 175, RHP, Caledonia, MS.
  • Jeffrey Rea, 5-9, 155, INF, Nettleton, MS.
  • Taylor Bennett, 6-3, 210, RHP, Covington, TN.
  • Bunky Kateon, 6-1, 185, SS, Mobile, AL.
