"We had opportunities to score more points, probably 21 points."
Players that played well against Troy State.
"Mario Haggan did a great job of trying to direct this football team and players. We actually didn't know if we would be able to play him Saturday because he had sinus problems including headaches and dizzy spells. He actually had sea sickness patches put behind his ears to get rid of the sickness.
"Fred Reid played very well. Justin Griffith played very well, also. Darius Tubbs caught the ball well and did a good job. Kevin Fant, even though he wasn't productive a couple of times, threw the ball well. Darren Williams played very well for a freshman. Ronald Fields and Korey Banks played well. Kamau Jackson did a really good job in pass defense."
Practice schedule this week.
"We will go out in sweats (Monday). We will go out in full gear (Tuesday) and have a more physical practice than we normally have on Tuesday. We will taper off Wednesday and Thursday. We will go to Memphis on Friday afternoon. We will change our routine a little bit. Normally, we try to go to a movie in the afternoon. Because it is a night game Saturday, we will go to a movie Friday night."
Players that won't practice Monday.
"We have quite a few. We are trying to figure out why it is taking Nick (Turner) so long to heal. We will do an MRI on him (Monday) to make sure there are (no problems) in there. Brent Smith won't practice (due to back spasms). Justin Jenkins won't practice and will be out for the game. (Terrell) Grindle won't practice (due to a toe injury), but he will be back. Kevin (Fant) won't practice, but will be back. We have a lot of other players that are nicked and bruised. We have to be smart (Tuesday) to make sure that the ones who are nicked and bruised don't get hurt so that they can't play Saturday."
Kevin Fant's status for this weekend's game.
"He will play. There is no damage. He has a bruise on his achilles. We have kept (his leg) immobilized."
Will Fred Reid start at tailback this weekend?
"That will depend on what the players do in practice."
Thoughts about playing Justin Griffith more at tailback.
"We play him at tailback a bunch. He has had his hands on the ball at tailback quite a bit. If you look at our charts you would see that we have designed plays for him. We try to get the ball to him whether it is by running or passing."
Will the same offensive linemen that started last weekend start this weekend?
"Hopefully. Unless something happens, yes."
Michael Gholar and Darren Williams play against Troy State.
"Both of those guys have played about the same amount of football. It is important that we understand that there will be some things in just about every snap that they haven't seen before. Both of them made some very good plays and didn't make some plays. It wasn't due to effort but because it was the first time to see some things.
"If we had had Michael (Gholar) for four years he would be an All-SEC, All-American type player. Football loses a lot of players due to college basketball. We lose outside linebackers, secondary people and receivers and sometimes tight ends. In the back of their mind, they (believe they will play in) the NBA. I had a player very (Sam Clancy) similar to Michael Gholar at Pittsburgh. I tried to get him to come out to play football and almost did until the basketball coach decided not to let him go out. He wasn't going to make it in pro basketball and he ended up having a 14-year career in pro football even though he never played college football."
Thoughts about the play of true freshman offensive tackle Richard Burch.
"He has done a very good job. Richard is a good football player. The problem that we had wasn't him. The one who gave up the sack came from the other side."
Do the dropped passes have an effect Fant's confidence in the receiver who drops the passes?
"Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. Every quarterback develops a relationship with a receiver. Every quarterback develops a confidence in a receiver. During a stretch when you have to win (or lose) a game, does that affect the quarterback throwing to the open guy? No. But during a game when two (receivers) are open and he the choice of doing certain thing, I'm sure his confidence in the receiver could play a part in who he passes to. Being a quarterback, you really need to block that out and play to your reads."
Thoughts about playing Memphis later in the season than normal.
"You have to prepare the same no matter when you play them. We will know more about them, but you have to understand that offensively and defensively they are going to be in the same schemes."
Thoughts about Memphis this year.
"When you look at their players, there is no question about their quarterback, Wimprine. He has thrown 14 touchdowns and only thrown 6 interceptions. He has four receivers (Gideon, White, Harden and Anglin) who have caught about the same number of passes. They are very productive."
