STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Mississippi State Lady Bulldogs picked up their second straight win to start the 2007 season, defeating the Centenary Ladies, 76-57, Sunday afternoon in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
The win gives Mississippi State its seventh-straight regular season non-conference victory dating back to last season.
In the first half, State would race out to an early 26-10 lead thanks in large part to Centenary miscues. The Bulldogs scored 13 points off of 18 Ladies' turnovers, which included 12 steals by the MState defense. Although Centenary shot nearly 57 percent from the field, State would lead 38-30 at the half.
Bethany Washington led all scorers with 10 points at the break. Meanwhile, Imesia Jackson scored seven, helping MSU to an 16-8 point advantage in the paint.
Mississippi State held the lead the entire second period, forcing Centenary into 21 percent shooting. The Lady Bulldogs would lead by as many as 22 in the second half, thanks to 21 points off the bench.
MSU was led in scoring by guard Alexis Rack who scored 14 points, with 11 of those coming after the break. Mary Kathryn Govero tallied her first double-figure scoring game of her maroon and white career with 11 points. Bethany Washington added 10 for MState.
Centenary would get a strong performance from guard Cierra Bush. Bush scored 16 points in 35 minutes of action.
The Lady Bulldogs will travel to Belmont this Thursday looking for their third straight win to start the season for the first time since the 2001-2002 campaign. Tipoff from the Curb Event Center in Nashville is set for 7 p.m. CT.
