Mississippi State baseball has commitments from seven players. So far, the only two players I know of that MSU has actively recruited (visit and offer) and did not receive a commitment from are RHP Patrick Ezell of Petal and RHP Jonathan Hancock of Tupelo. Ezell chose Southern Miss over MSU and Ole Miss. Hancock committed to Ole Miss over MSU. My best guess is MSU will sign between 8 and 10 players - all pitchers and infielders - during the early period. I'm assuming MSU is not recruiting any catchers or outfielders due to the large number of freshman at both of those positions and the 11.7 scholarships limitation.

Here is a list of the current commitments and what schools they strongly considerd based on my interviews with either the youngster or a parent.

  • Taylor Bennett, 6-3, 210, RHP, Covington, TN. Chose MSU over Ole Miss, Tenn. and Arkansas.
  • Jeremiah Boling, 6-1, 175, LHP, Rome, GA. Chose MSU over Georgia.
  • Eric Ebers, 6-1, 190, LHP, Juco in Carterville, IL. I haven't talked to Eric so I'm not sure what schools he considered.
  • Trent Hill, 6-2, 195, RHP/INF, Jasper, AL. Chose MSU over South Alabama, Samford and Alabama. Also received interest from Georgia and Ole Miss. A good football player who has received recruiting calls from Alabama and Ole Miss. In fact, Ole Miss called him as late as two weeks ago. He gave up football this season to concentrate on baseball.
  • Josh Johnson, 6-1, 175, RHP, Caledonia, MS. Although he received interest from several schools, Josh never really considered any other school because he grew up an MSU fan.
  • Bunky Kateon, 6-1, 185, INF, Mobile, AL. Chose MSU over Ole Miss and Alabama.
  • Jeffrey Rea, 5-9, 155, INF, Nettleton, MS. Chose MSU over Ole Miss.
