Austin showed consistency throughout the three sessions, scoring 11, 11 and 16 points. Quite a few of his points were scored from the outside, showing a new aspect of his game. Mario played both the four and five positions.
Bowers, a former Mississippi player of the year from Gulfport's Harrison Central High School, scored 31 points on 12-of-19 shooting from the field and 5-of-6 from the stripe. This year's team co-captain was also credited with six assists and only one turnover.
Bowers' backcourt teammate and fellow team co-captain, senior point guard Derrick Zimmerman contributed 13 points on 6-of-7 field-goal shooting, along with distributing a scrimmage-high 10 assists and making four steals.
Sophomore swingman Ontario Harper and senior forward Michal Ignerski added 25 and 24 points, respectively.
Sophomore Winsome Frazier led all players with 9 steals, most coming from great anticipation of passes in the lanes.
Newcomer Brandon Vincent led all players with 10 rebounds, followed by Harper's 7 and Austin's and Ignerski's 6 a piece.
Sophomore center Marcus Campbell, in a battle with junior Lincoln Smith for the starting center spot, showed a nice shooting touch, scoring 12 points on 5-12 from the field and 2-2 from the free throw line.
Two players did not play due to minor injuries, Stephen Cowherd (bruised foot) and Lincoln Smith (toe).
For the three sessions, the teams shot .561 (64-114) from the field, .469 (15-32) from three-point range and .765 (26-34) from the charity stripe.
In the first of two preseason exhibition contests, coach Rick Stansbury's Bulldogs will play host to BWB of California next Saturday, Nov. 9. Free and open to the public, tip-off time for next weekend's exhibition basketball game is slated for 7 p.m. at Humphrey Coliseum.
MSU's second and final preseason exhibition contest will take place Thursday, Nov. 14 against the Harlem Globetrotters. Tickets for Mississippi State's exhibition finale are available for $12.
The Bulldogs, defending SEC Tournament champions and ranked 13th in the USA Today/ESPN Top 25 preseason coaches' poll, will tip off their 91st season of collegiate basketball competition by playing host to Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday, Nov. 23.
