Sam Stewart Recruiting Update

[Premium Article] Sam Stewart, playing quarterback for his high school team this season, is a defensive back prospect from Mary G. Montgomery High School in Semmes, Alabama. Gene's Page correspondent Brent Bozeman caught up with him a few nights ago.

Sam, I've heard that Mississippi State is recruiting you, so I wanted to ask you some questions so that Gene's Page readers can learn something about you. Tell us about yourself - your height, weight, 40 time etc.
"Alright. I'm 6-2, 200 pounds, and I run about a 4.58 to a 4.6. I play for Mary G. Montgomery in Semmes, Alabama."

And I think you play safety?
"I played safety my 10th and 11th grade years but this year I'm playing quarterback."

Are you playing any safety or only quarterback?
"Well, I'm being recruited as a safety more than I am as a quarterback, but I'm having to play quarterback this year."

How did Mississippi State find out about you?
"I have no idea, really."

Have you been to any camps there?
"No. I've never been to any camps."

What about recruiting? What teams are recruiting you?
"LSU, Auburn, and Mississippi State. That's the only coaches I've talked to."

Which coach is recruiting you for State? "Curley Hallman. I think he's a nice fellow. I've talked to him and my dad has talked to him."

Who are you most interested in? Do you have a top five?
"I would say LSU, Auburn, Mississippi State, Alabama, and UAB."

Have you received any scholarship offers yet?
"No, not yet."

Did you grow up a fan of any particular school?
"I grew up an Alabama fan. My whole family was Alabama fans."

So if Alabama offered you a scholarship, would you go to Alabama?
"Oh yeah."

Have you visited any schools recently?
"I went to Auburn Saturday."

Did you enjoy your visit to Auburn?
"Yeah. It was good. I got there kind of late so I didn't really have time to talk to them very much."

Obviously, you can play both sides of the ball. Do you like playing offense or defense better?
"I like playing defense a little better, but whatever is better for the team. That's the way I look at it."

Since you are playing quarterback this year, what do you think is making these SEC schools recruit you as a safety?
"Probably my size and speed."

Did you have good stats last year?
"I had pretty good stats last year. I think I had 87 tackles, 3 interceptions and I ran a couple of punts back for touchdowns."

That sounds pretty good.

How familiar are you with Mississippi State?
"Not very. I'm not too familiar with it."

Since you might play defense in college, do you know anything about their defense?
"Not really. I just watch the games and enjoy the games."

Do you know who the defensive coordinator is?

It's getting late and I won't keep you any longer. Thanks for the interview and good luck the rest of the season.
