#24 MSU Lady Bulldogs Top Houston, 97-51

STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Lady Bulldogs were victorious Friday night in their first of two exhibition games, with a 97-51 win against the Houston Jaguars.

The Lady Bulldogs came out scoring early and often on the way to a 16-3 early run, leading at the half, 47-21.

Returning starters LaToya Thomas, Tan White and Renea Jones, along with first time starters Blessing Chekwa and Rebecca Kates played a majority of the first half, totaling 35 of the 47 points scored.

Three time Kodak All-American Thomas led all scorers with a game-high 29 points and 15 rebounds. White contributed 15 points and seven rebounds. Senior point guard Jones led the Bulldogs with six assists in 25 minutes.

Other Lady Bulldogs to contribute off the bench were Jessica Carter with 15 points, including four three-pointers, and freshman Mamie McKinney recorded 12 points in her first collegiate game.

"We had good balance and a lot of people got to play, it was a good start for us," said head coach Sharon Fanning.

The Jaguars were led by former Lady Bulldog standout LaCharlotte Smith, who recorded 13 points for Houston. Andrea Jackson led the way with 16 points of her own.

The Lady Bulldogs return to action next Monday, Nov. 11 in their final exhibition game versus TJ Sokol (a.k.a. Basketball Travelers) at 7 p.m. MSU will open the 2002-03 season next Friday, Nov. 15 vs. South Alabama in the first round of the WNIT at 7 p.m. in Humphrey Coliseum.
