Round 2 Update From MSU Golf Coach Clay Homan

Mississippi State's men's golf team, which is participating in the NCAA Championship at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Indiana, is currently in a tie for 27th place after shooting the 14th best score of the day today, 297, among the 30 teams playing in the championship. MSU golf coach Clay Homan talked about his team's excellent performance in the second round.

[At the end of Friday's round of golf, the top 15 teams advance to the final round of golf to compete for the national championship. Right now, MSU is 17 strokes out of 15th place.]

Your team did well today.
"Yeah, we bounced back, but everybody else did, too. We had a much better day, though. We played like we were capable of playing today."

Of your five guys, who stood out today?
"Josh Oller shot 73, but they all played much more consistent today. And truth be known we didn't finish off as well as we started. We played the last two holes seven over. We were two over (par) with two (holes) to play. But of course, the 17 and 18 are tough holes. Other than that, we played good."

What was the difference between today when your team shot a 297 compared to yesterday when they shot a 326.
"Number 1 were the conditions. It was about 25 to 30 degrees warmer. The ball goes further when it's warmer. And we played with no wind today (compared to 20 miles per hour winds yesterday). That was a huge factor. Because of that, you are not putting yourself into a lot of trouble. Today, we didn't put ourselves behind the eight ball like we did yesterday. We didn't have to count any high scores today like we did yesterday. And having to count two 84s and and a 81 is hard to overcome.

"And I think they came out today with a little bit to prove, a little more determination. They knew yesterday was not the way they wanted people to think they play. And they proved today that they could play much better.

"They are playing well right now. We shot the same score as the number 1 team in the country, Alabama. And the number 2 team in the country, Southern Cal, only beat us by three shots. We knew we could play with those guys, but we have to come to play. Today, we did that.

"Hopefully, we can end it on a good note tomorrow and then we'll see what happens. But no matter what, I am proud of the way they played today and I'm looking forward to another good round tomorrow."

The five MSU golfers competing in the championship are ranked as follows in the championship (T means tied):

  • Noah Goldman - T54th
  • Carlos Sainz - T96th
  • Josh Oller - T109
  • Matt Fast - T114
  • Josh Bevell - T140

Clemson, ranked 10th in the nation, is currently leading all teams with a 589 score, which leads No. 5 ranked UCLA by a point. Among SEC schools, Florida is currently 4th in the championship, four strokes behind the leader.
