Weatherford: Pro or College

Mississippi State closer Aaron Weatherford was drafted in the third round by the Colorado Rockies in last week's Major League Baseball draft. He's talked to new head coach John Cohen and he's talked to the pro team that drafted him. Now, it's decision time for the hard-throwing righthander.

"(Coach Cohen) talked to me and he was upfront with me. He told me if something happened and I didn't go pro that he had a spot for me on the roster," said Weatherford, who had a 3-1 record with 7 saves and a 0.85 ERA while striking out 62 in in 31.2 innings of work during the 2008 season.

After talking to Cohen he believes next year's Mississippi State baseball season should be exciting for the fans, but a little anxious for some of the players.

"I think next year will be an exciting year if for no other reason than everything is going to be new," said Weatherford. "I know going into the fall some of the guys will be anxious because they know they aren't guaranteed a spot. So, there will be some guys with wide open eyes."

While he was impressed with Cohen, he's also been just as impressed with the Major League Baseball team that drafted him.

"The organization that drafted me has talked to me and laid it out for me," said Weatherford. "I've been impressed with them and I've also been impressed with their scout."

So, is it college or pro?

"I'm leaning to going pro," said Weatherford. "I just feel blessed for having this opportunity."
