Outstanding Juco Pitcher Visits MSU

Tim Statz, one of the best freshman pitchers in the junior college ranks, officially visited Mississippi State this past weekend.

"The visit was great," said Tim. "I really liked it down there. The southern hospitality was great."

Although he's passed through Mississippi before when he was traveling to other states, this was his first time to take in the sights at Mississippi State.

"I didn't know anything about Mississippi State really," said the Hutchinson Community College standout. "I now know that they have good baseball down there. And it's the SEC. Of course, they love their sports down there and they are big fans. And everybody is really nice."

He also came away impressed with the State coaching staff.

"The coaching staff is great," said Tim, who played his high school ball at Marquette High School in Chesterfield, Missouri. "I know they are new, but everybody who has had recent dealings with them said they are great and have turned different programs around. There is nothing but good to say about them."

While he came away impressed with Mississippi State after his visit, they are just one of four schools that he's interested in.

"I've visited Nebraska, Mizzou and I'm visiting TCU this week," said the youngster. "I visited Mizzou two weeks ago and Nebraska was over the summer. I have two more visits so I'm still deciding if I'm going to take them."

If any of the schools have jumped ahead of the others, Tim's not saying.

"I don't have any favorites," said the 6-0, 170-pound lefty. " I'm just soaking in all the information from each of the schools. Then, when I'm through visiting, I'm going to sit down and decide which one I like."

And he expects to make that decision very soon.

"I am most definitely going to sign early (in November)," said Tim. "It's going to be a tight fit where I am going to go and what is best for me. But when it comes down to the deadline I will get it figured out."

There are certain things that will factor into his decision.

"It's one of those things where you go to a college and you know whether it's the one or not," said Tim, who then went into a little more detail. "The success of the program and the surrounding is big. And the people that are around the team. And distance is not a problem for me. But if I was going to say what the number one thing is, it is the coaching staff."

When asked if any of the coaching staffs have stood out over the others, Tim said, "all the coaching staffs have unique ways about them. So, it's really hard to tell."

During his freshman season at Hutchinson Community College, Tim, who throws a fastball (87-88 mph), changeup and curveball, was 5-3 with a 3.54 earned average. He started 11 games, completing three. He struck out 65 in 56 innings while allowing 43 hits and walking 25. Teams hit .215 against him. In conference play, he was 4-1 with a 2.30 ERA and teams hit .174 against him.
