STARKVILLE, Miss. - Despite one of its best defensive efforts of the season, the Mississippi State soccer team could not parlay the momentum of an early Bethany Frazier goal, falling 2-1 to Tennessee Sunday afternoon in a Southeastern Conference matchup at the MSU Soccer Field.
MState took the opening advantage in the 16th minute as Frazier took a pass on the left wing from Lauren Morgan and Mary Clare Scurria, turned to the middle of the field and lined the ball past UT goalkeeper Jaimel Johnson into the right side of the net.
The Bulldogs took the lead to the half, but UT tied the match just four minutes into the second stanza as Kylee Rossi connected on her 12th goal of the season from just beyond the 18-yard box. Prior to Sunday's match, the Bulldogs were 5-0 when leading at the intermission.
The Lady Vols scored the winning goal at the 78:38 mark as Sarah Jackyra inbounded the ball into Devon Swaim who turned and fired a shot into the back of the net from 20 yards out.
"It's a disappointing result, but I am very proud of the way our team played today," MSU head coach Neil Macdonald said. "This was a tough outcome because I don't think we could have played better. We just got beat by a wonderful strike."
Although the Bulldogs were out-shot in the match 21-7, only four of UT's attempts came on goal while State managed to put a pair of balls on the net. Both Johnson and MState junior Taryn Holland stopped a shot each.
The Bulldogs return to the road Thursday, traveling to Lexington, Ky., to meet the Kentucky Wildcats in a 6 p.m. CST kickoff. State returns to the home pitch Sunday, hosting Vanderbilt at 1 p.m.
