Star Juco Shortstop To Visit MSU This Weekend

Allen County (KS) Community College shortstop Dillon Hazlett, one of the top shortstops in the junior college ranks, is officially visiting Mississippi State this coming weekend.

"I'm visiting Mississippi State this weekend," said Dillon Hazlett, last year's Jayhawk Conference Freshman-of-the-Year after hitting .384 with 7 home runs and 40+ RBI as well as stealing 25 bases in 26 attempts.

"I have also visited K-State (Kansas State), Wichita State and TCU. K-State and Wichita State are unofficial because I live right by them. And I'm going to visit North Carolina after I visit Mississippi State. Those are the only schools that I'm really considering."

Although he's a Topeka, Kansas native, he knows a little about the state of Mississippi and Mississippi State.

"I've been to Mississippi once when I was a senior in high school," said Dillon. "That summer we had the world series which was in Jackson, Mississippi."

As for what he knows about Mississippi State University, he said, "I know they have been good in the past and I know they have a new coaching staff. I've heard that (head coach John Cohen) is a winner and one of the hardest working coaches. I have talked to some of the coaches and they seem pretty cool. Their field and their stadium look pretty sweet. It just looks like something that I might be looking for."

He talked about the schools that he has previously visited and where they fit in his recruiting picture.

"K-State was ok, but I really don't think they are what I'm looking for. And Wichita State has been really good in the past and I talked to their coaches and they seem pretty cool. And they have a good field, so I'm still considering them. I liked what I saw at TCU, so they are at the top of my list so far."

The final school that he is interested in is North Carolina. He explained what he likes about them.

"They've been to the College World Series the last five years and may have won it a couple of years ago," said Dillon.

He explained the specific things that he is looking for in a college.

"I'm looking for warm weather, a good team that has a chance to go to the College World Series and good coaches," said Dillon. "And one of the big things is my scholarship (money). I also want to get out of Kansas and play somewhere different."

And in a couple of weeks, one of five teams will be rewarded with the signature of this outstanding baseball player.

Will it be Kansas State, Wichita State, TCU, Mississippi State or North Carolina? Stay tuned to to find out.
