Nelson Staying Close to Home

Derrius Nelson enrolled at Northwest Community College after a standout career at Indianola-Gentry. After a season in junior college, the versatile Nelson is headed to the SWAC.

After careful consideration and consulting with his family, Derrius decided on Mississippi Valley State.

"I signed on Thursday," said Nelson. "I had four offers. Valley, UABP, Murray State and Southeastern LA all offered me. Valley is close to home and I get to play with a former teammate Chico Potts. He was a standout at Gentry."

During the recruiting process, Nelson got the chance to bond with his future coach and mentor.

"I like Coach (Sean)Woods a lot," said Derrius. "He is a real good guy and I think I have the chance to play a lot. He played at Kentucky and then he was an assistant at TCU. He knows the game. I am looking forward to playing for him."

Nelson had a good season for the Rangers of Northwest Community college last season, but this season Northwest will be without his services.

"It was a good experience," said Derrius of his time at Northwest. "It prepared me to play at the next level. I had a good time and I learned a lot. I played last year, but this year I am going to redshirt. I will have three years to play three at Valley.
