Varnado Prepping For University Games Camp

Now that he has settled his status for the coming senior season in college, Jarvis Varnado can get busy with a summer extension on his amateur career. Next month the star Bulldog center will attend camp to prepare for the World University Games.

Varnado, who two weeks ago officially withdrew from the National Basketball Association draft pool, will report to camp in Colorado Springs next month as part of the United States team tryouts. Camp is June 16-18, with the team coached by Wisconsin's Bo Rein.

This edition of the World University Games will be played in Belgrade, Serbia, starting July 2 and running through the 12th.

As a junior Varnado became the first two-time selection as SEC Defensive Player of the Year, having broken the league record for blocked shots that he had tied the season before. Varnado blocked 170 this past season and has 394 for his career, needing 18 more to match the SEC career record.

Varnado submitted his name for the NBA draft in April and was told by pro analysts what State coaches and fans knew, that his offensive game needs improvement. He did raise his scoring average by five points, from 7.9 to 12.9 as a junior.
