STARKVILLE - Mississippi State seniors Anthony Dixon and Jamar Chaney have been named to the 2009 preseason All-SEC team selected by the coaches, the league announced Thursday.

Dixon rushed for 869 yards in the 2008 season. Chaney led the team in tackles in 2007 before suffering a broken leg in the first game of the 2008 campaign. Both were selected to last year's preseason All-SEC team as well.

Mississippi State begins practice on August 3rd in preparation for their season opener against Jackson State on September 5th.

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State soccer signee Monica Alvarado has been named to Mexico's Women's National Soccer Team that will be playing in some international exhibition matches this month.

The team recently played matches against Oklahoma and Arkansas select squads and the Tulsa Spirit. Her next action with the Mexican National Team will be matches against Venezuela and a Canadian regional team.

Alvarado makes the jump to the national team after playing on both the U20 and U17 squads. The U17 team won the 2008 CONCACAF Championship.

A member of the North Texas Olympic Development Program, Alvarado played club soccer for the FC Dallas '91 squad that advanced to the 2008 Southern Regional and Premier League West finals.

Concluding her prep career at Southlake Carroll High School, Alvarado earned three Texas 5-5A First Team All-District selections and guided the 2008 team to the state's 5A state championship.

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State University placed 38 student-athletes on the Southeastern Conference Freshman Academic Honor Roll, the league office announced Thursday. MSU's 38 freshman academic honorees tied for fourth among all conference schools in sports in which MSU competes. Only South Carolina (63), Florida (45) and Alabama (44) had more than MSU in those sports. State tied with Tennessee. A total of 564 student-athletes were named to the honor roll, which was based on grades from the 2008-09 academic calendar year. The criteria for the honor roll is that each student-athlete must 1) have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution; 2) be on scholarship or a letter winner; 3) have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit at the nominating institution; and 4) have been a member of the varsity team for the sport's entire NCAA Championship segment.
