Three Draftees Stick With MSU

One current Mississippi State baseball player and two signees have put their pro careers on hold after being drafted in the June Major League Baseball draft. Senior-to-be first baseball Connor Powers and signees Jaron Shepherd, a junior college outfielder, and C.C. Watson, a high school lefthanded pitcher, have all turn down offers from the teams that drafted them.

Powers, who hit .301 while leading the Bulldogs in home runs and RBI with 19 and 63 during the 2009 season, was drafted by the Los Andgeles Dodgers in the 11th round of the June Major League Baseball draft. He turned down a last day offer from the Dodgers Monday, August 17th, the deadline that drafted players could sign.

Signees Jaron Shepherd was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 44th round while C.C. Watson was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 29th round.

While Shepherd turned the Reds offer down earlier in the summer, Watson was a little more touch and go with him turning down a very significant amount of money the last couple of weeks, an amount that appeared to be in the low six-figures. Both confirmed that they would be wearing the Maroon and White this coming season by attending a team meeting this past Sunday.

The draft wasn't all good news for the Bulldog coaching staff, however, with one junior and one signee being drafted and signing with the pro teams that drafted them.

Junior righthanded pitcher Ricky Bowen signed with the Cincinnati Reds after being drafted in the 38th round, while outfield signee Runey Davis, a 12th round selection, signed with the Chicago Cubs.

In three seasons with the Bulldogs Bowen was 10-11 with five saves and a 6.55 earned run average.

Second-year head coach John Cohen, in addition to Powers, Shepherd and Watson, returns 17 players from last year's team as well as 20+ signees and walkons for the 2010 season.

Fall practice is tentatively scheduled to begin October 2nd, although with Dudy Noble Field's drainage and sprinkler systems currently being replaced that date is subject to change.
