    Assistant coach Nick Mingione interview

There were some good plays by the catchers today, especially blocking balls in the dirt. How has the catching look overall during the first five scrimmages?
"The catching has gotten better. Coach (John) Cohen and Coach (Lane) Burroughs have spent a lot of time with those guys. Actually those guys just did a video review just yesterday. They got the opportunity to sit down and break down all of their catching, each one of them. They all had the opportunity to see themselves on video, both good blocks and bad blocks, good receiving and bad receiving. I thought they did a good job in the meeting and then the catchers carried it out today."

    Video for catchers?
"Video has been so instrumental in our program. I've asked some of those guys if they have ever seen themselves catch on video. And they never have in their entire lives. Most people want to see themselves on video hitting but defense is extremely important to us. And they got the opportunity to see themselves play defense and it was in front of their peers, too."

Going back to the scrimmage, what were some positive things you saw?
"Devin Jones continues to impress. He has done a great job the entire fall. Nick Routt threw really well. I think our infield defense is better. I think our catchers throwing and blocking is improved. There haven't been many plays in the outfield but I think that part has also gotten better."

What are your impressions of the hitting so far?
"I think we have had great at-bats. But hitting is just one small piece of the offense. I think we had four hit by pitches today. I think we had a few walks mixed in there. And I think our baserunning and base stealing has improved. And we have mixed some hits in there. We are going to be better offensively, for sure."

Who are some new guys that you like on the offensive side of the ball?
"I am going to say Trey Johnson. He had five quality at-bats today. And we have some other guys who are really trying hard to work on their strike zone discipline. That is what is so neat about the fall."

What are your thoughts about Ryan Collins and Brent Brownlee, two returning outfielders?
"His at-bats, to me, have been as good as anybody on the team, if not the best. And defensively, he is a very solid player. He is going to make the plays and make good decisions with his throwing. I think Brent Brownlee is as good of an outfielder as their is in the SEC, if not the best. Offensively, he has a swagger and an appearance about him in the batters box that I'm not sure he had last year. He has a level of confidence that we like."

True freshman RHP Chris Stratton interview

Did it surprise you that you were topping out at 91 in your first outing in the fall?
"I guess it did. I was just going out there and trying to remember everything that they have taught me here, and just trying to apply all the knowledge that (assistant) Coach (Butch) Thompson has put forth."

How much do you weigh now? And how much have you gained since you have gotten to Mississippi State?
    "I'm 185 right now. I have gained 10 pounds."

What's it been like so far during your first weeks of 4 on 1s and now the scrimmages?
"It's been fun. I'm just trying to learn everything and get to know all the guys. We've been working hard in the weight room, trying to get better."

Has Coach Thompson added any new pitches to your repertoire?
    "A changeup."

How have you been doing with the changeup?
    "I'm still working on it, it's still a work-in-progress."
