Samford Lady Bulldogs
  • Coach: Mike Morris
  • Team Record: 7-2

    About the Lady Bulldogs:
Mike Morris has done a great job in his seven seasons as head coach of the Lady Bulldogs improving a team that won 3 games the year before he took over to 23 wins last season. Coach Morris was rewarded by being named the Southern Conference Coach of the Year. They have continued the turnaround this season with a 7-2 record on the year. Samford has played a few big opponents this season having faced Maryland who the Mississippi State Lady Bulldogs have already defeated. Samford, after facing Mississippi State, will have played one SEC and ACC school on the season with Virginia on tap later in December. Coach Morris has the team in position to be more prominent on the NCAA women's basketball landscape in the future.

Alexis Rack had her second biggest scoring output of the season, scoring 32 points while connecting from 6-of-14 from 3-point range. The Lady Bulldogs are looking to start a new winning streak against the Samford Lady Bulldogs.

    Star Watch:
Mississippi State - MSU senior guard Alexis Rack is having a great season averaging 20.6 points after scoring 32 points in a comeback victory against Louisiana Tech. Rack also leads Mississippi State in steals with 2.66 and assist with 4.3. If she continues her current pace, she is definitely headed toward another 1st team All-SEC season.

Samford - Sophomore guard Emily London, last year's Ohio Valley Conference Freshmen of the Year after leading the team in scoring with 12.2 points per game, will look to lead underdog Samford versus the veteran Mississippi State Lady Bulldogs. She is averaging 14.1 points to go along with 4.7 rebounds. She also is connecting .486 percent of her threes while averaging 1.88 steals per game. The Lady Bulldogs will need a big performance from London if they hope to upset Mississippi State.

    The Match-Up:
On paper, this game is one that Mississippi State should win. But the game is not played on paper and the reality is this could wind up being a dangerous game for the MSU Lady Bulldogs. Samford is a team that may not score a lot, averaging 64.8 points per game, but they are highly efficient, hitting .382 percent of their threes. And because of that, if Mississippi State gets lazy on defense, especially on the perimeter, Samford could score in bunches. But Mississippi State is a perimeter-oriented team themselves and should be able to do good job of guarding against the three. While Samford is efficient shooting the ball, they aren't as efficient holding onto it, averaging 14.8 turnovers per game. Mississippi State should take advantage of that due to their ball-stealing prowess, averaging 11.2 steals per game. I expect Samford to put up a good fight early but for Mississippi State to pull away late and win convincingly.
