"Playing with Coach (Wayne) Brent, my high school coach, he always preaches about playing defense, you can't win without defense," said Smith. "No matter how much you play on offense if you can't stop the other team from scoring you don't have a chance to win."
He also takes pride in getting his teammates and the crowd involved in the game.
"I love making moves and getting the crowd on their feet and I love passing," said Smith.
And another love of his is dunking, something he's been doing for several years.
"I've been able to dunk since I was in the 7th grade; I was probably about 5-foot-9 then," said Smith, who is now 5-foot-11.
According to his AAU coach, Omhar Carter of MBA Hoops, there are many aspects to Smith's game. And Carter's not afraid to tell you how talented this young point guard is in relation to other point guards in the nation.
"Deville Smith, who is 5-11, is one of the top point guards, in my opinion, in the country," noted Carter. "He has a motor and runs hard all the time and he plays hard. It's hard to find guards who play from the tipoff to the end of the game, but he is one of them. And his athletic ability is great. The way he flies through the air and jumps allows him to play above the rim. And most guards his size can't do that. He has no weaknesses."
And considering the number of colleges after Smith, there are a lot of college coaches in agreement with Carter's assessment of him.
"Marquette, Baylor, Mississippi State, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Kentucky, West Virginia, Florida, Memphis and several others are recruiting me," said Smith. "All of them have offered."
As for who might be in the lead for the youngster, Smith is not quite ready to narrow down his list.
"I'm interested in all the schools that are interested in me," said Smith. "I'm looking at all the schools."
While not ready to name a final list of suitors, he does have some high goals for himself and the college he winds up attending.
"I really want to come in and start as a freshman, maybe be one and done" said Smith. "And I want to lead my team to the Final Four and a national championship. Those are my goals."
