Positional Breakdown, Part-7: Athletes

Included is a detailed breakdown of the Mississippi State athletes (players who can play a variety of positions) based on their 2009 play and how they looked and performed during the just-completed spring practices and scrimmages.

Athletes

Arceto Clark (5'11 185) Redshirt Sophomore

  • Scout Ranking:***
  • Possible Positions: CB, X, Z, H-Back
  • 2009 Stats: No Stats(Ineligible)
  • Spring Game: Receiving- 1-20 0 TD

    Synopsis:
Clark was billed as Coach Sylvester Croom's secret weapon during the 2008 season. He wasn't quite the weapon Croom had hoped but he still was a big part of the Bulldog's plans after Croom's firing. Clark was deemed ineligible for the 2009 season though. He came into the 2010 spring looking to get on the field somewhere whether at cornerback or receiver. He looked good at cornerback before the coaching staff decided to move him to receiver after Sam William's injury. He looked good at receiver the rest of the spring. Clark has the ability to play receiver or cornerback the coaches have to decide where they want him though. He, in my opinion, could play both ways as he is that skilled at both. It also could be a way of maximizing Clark's abilities while he develops.

    Strengths:

  • Ball Skills (Offense and Defense)
  • Hands (Offense)
  • Closing Speed (Defense)
  • Versatility

    Weaknesses:

  • Inexperience

    2010 Projection:
10 Tackles (Defense) Receiving 9-84 yds. 0 TD (Offense)

I can't project Clark completely as his future is still undetermined but he definitely will have an impact somewhere.

    Jeff Howie( 6'4 330) Junior

  • Scout Ranking:***
  • Possible Positions: DT, OG,OT
  • 2009 (JUCO) Stats:38 Tackles/12 TFL/ 5 Sacks

    Synopsis:
Howie was an All-State offensive lineman and All-State defensive tackle as a sophomore. The Mississippi State coaches couldn't pass up his versatility and signed him. He won't be on campus until the summer but he should quickly get in the mix somewhere.

    Strengths:

  • Strength
  • Athleticism
  • Versatility
  • Aggressiveness

    Weaknesses:

  • Raw
  • Footwork

    2010 Projection:
    Back up guard and tackle

He will play around on defense for a few days then probably switch over to the offensive line and become a valuable swing guy.

Matthew Wells (6'2 205) True Freshman

  • Scout Ranking:****
  • Possible Positions: RB,WR,TE,SS,LB
  • 2009 (High School) Stats: Rushing- 1,055 yds. 10 TD; Receiving- 77 yds. 1 TD

    Synopsis:
Wells is an extraordinary athlete that could play a variety of positions at the college level. He has never lifted weights so his body will go through a huge transformation his freshman year. Wells does remind me of a faster version of current Bulldog Marcus Green. A little hint as to where I think Wells will ultimately will end up.

    Strengths:

  • Top End Speed
  • Versatility
  • Hands
  • Closing Speed
  • Frame
  • Ball Skills

    Weaknesses:

  • Durability
  • Agility

    2010 Projection:

  • Scout Ranking:***
  • Possible Positions: H-Back, CB
  • 2009 (High School) Stats: Rushes- 143-856 4 TD; Receiving 7-62 0 TD

    Synopsis:
Hughes is the son of current Bulldog safeties coach Tony Hughes. Hughes is also blessed with tremendous speed and can play a variety of positions. He is definitely a candidate to play as a freshman.

    Strengths:

  • Great Speed
  • Football I.Q.
  • Elusiveness
  • Ability to get Crease

    Weaknesses:

  • Route Running
  • Raw (Defense)
  • Size

    2010 Projection:
    8 tackles

Hughes might get a chance at receiver but will likely end up on defense and used on special teams his freshman season.

Jameon Lewis (5'8 170) True Freshman

  • Scout Ranking:**
  • Possible Positions: CB, H-Back
  • 2009 (High School) Stats: Passing 1,241 yds. 13 TD; Rushing 1,194 yds. 18 TD

    Synopsis:
Lewis is an electric athlete that reminds me of Dexter McCluster in build and the fact that they both possess great next man speed. Lewis is projected as a corner but he could have a chance to play H-Back when he arrives in the fall.

    Strengths:

  • Next Man Speed (Offense)
  • Elusiveness (Offense)
  • Good change of direction
  • Toughness

    Weaknesses:

  • Size
  • Raw (Defense)

    2010 Projection:
    Redshirt

Lewis will get a chance to start out on offense but will likely move to cornerback and redshirt.

  • Scout Ranking:**
  • Possible Positions: H-Back, CB
  • 2009 (High School) Stats: Rushing- 1,799 yds. 21 TD; Receiving 425 yds. 6 TD

    Synopsis:
Love had a great high school career playing all over the field for Aberdeen High School. He is also projected as a cornerback like Jameon Lewis but will likely get a chance to play H-Back to start off his career.

    Strengths:

  • Fluid
  • Elusiveness
  • Good Speed

    Weaknesses:

  • Raw (Defense)
  • Toughness

    2010 Projection:
    Redshirt

Love will probably play around at receiver for a few days but will eventually move to cornerback and redshirt.

Brandon Hill (6'2 218) True Freshman

  • Scout Ranking:**
  • Possible Positions: WR,WLB
  • 2009 (High School) Stats: First Team Class 2A

    Synopsis:
Hill had a solid career at West Lowndes but will now bring his talents to Mississippi State. He played out of position in high school but will get a chance to play his more natural linebacker position in college.

    Strengths:

  • Closing Speed (Defense)
  • Athleticism
  • Tackling (Defense)
  • Frame

    Weaknesses:

  • Agility
  • Raw (Defense)

    2010 Projection:
    Redshirt or Special Teams

Hill will also get a shot to play receiver due to the need there but will eventually move to SAM linebacker and push for playing time there.
